Hi all =) I've been wanting to build a new system for a long time, and I just couldn't take it anymore! I was looking at BFG's 6800GT tonight because it's all over the net for $399 or so. Then the biggest-toy-bug bit me and I thought "Crap, for another hundred bucks I can get the Ultra!". Dumb price v. performance decision? Probably, but I don't care! I've waited so long and I want the bestest! hehe

So here's what I have in mind so far:

A64 3500 / socket 939 version on the new 90nm process
A really good mobo.
some kinda RAM?
A SATA HD I guess??
A really cool looking case with blinking lights is a must.

Yeah, that's about as far as I got. One thing I do want is a good power supply, because that is one part you can actually migrate to a new system someday. I saw lots of good stuff about PC Power & Cooling's 510w model, and I think if I'm going to splurge on the BFG I should at least support it with something that good, even if it is another 200 bucks.

Other than that, I'm hoping to make up a little of my excessive spending on stuff like the HD and case. I think a good brand 7200RPM SATA should be fine, right? I don't have enough money left over for that dual-Raptor setup everyone seems to like. Also, I don't see a need to spend a bunch of money the case, because they seem mostly for looks anyway. There's some cool-looking things out there for pretty cheap, but I don't know really what to look for in a case.

Any suggestions for a system built around A64 3500 and 6800U?

If you have a good brand pata hdd, that should be good. There's no difference between pata and sata, unless you go raid. Raid in pata is just as good.
You can go pretty low end on the ram, the LL and OCers ram doesn't do much for A64s

OCZ's EB series - PC3200 to PC3700 are great with the A64's on die memory controller, but prepare to be set back quite a bit for a 1GB kit (Not that it looks like you care so much, judging from you sys-to-be). Pick DDR speed according to planned OC.
'bout HDD, I'm thinking myself of buying the Maxtor Maxline III 300GB 16MB cache as it offers good performance, and unlike the Raptor, decent $/GB ratio and some space for things other than OS and Office... If you want only storage space and transfer rates/latencies mean less to you (like if you wanna store and play large media files) you can go with a 200GB 8MB cache drive, these offer best price per GB.
