Hi all,

My rig is the following atm (an old rig actually with an updated GPU):

CPU: i7 920 overclocked @ 3.6
GPU: evga gtx 1060 superclocked
Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-Extreme
RAM: 12gb DDR3 triple channel
Monitor: 1920 x 1200
PSU: 1200W Thermaltake

Unfortunately I am under the suspicion that my motherboard is dying. It does not boot with my usual overclock settings and I have to reset CMOS in order my machine to become alive again. I manage to run prime95 for 2 hours with no error but at some point (just before the 2 hours) the clock was running 20 minutes late. It shut down normally but couldn't boot next morning. I have tried 4-5 different CMOS batteries so this shouldn't be the case. Hopefully my PSU should be fine (the paper clip test passes since the fan spins but I know it's not a bullet proof way of testing). My PC is stable under default settings but I have tried so many times to overclock it but it looks like it isn't accepting overclocking anymore. As a result I think it's time for a new mobo.

Requirements:

  • Games + Development
  • Something to match my gtx 1060. I play at 1920x1200 atm. My plan is to build a more high end system in the near future but I would like my mobo to have breathing space in case things get delayed for a couple of years and I have to upgrade my current gpu. Does it make sense?
  • Processor (probably Intel)
  • Memory - I suppose I cannot reuse the sticks I already have. How much memory do you suggest? Speed? etc.
I haven't built a PC recently so some guidance would be nice regarding mobo/processor/memory options/requirements.

Thanks a lot!

I have done some research during the last days and I am considering either Ryzen 5 2600X or Ryzen 5 3600X

My gtx 1060 could be a bit weak for this CPUs and could bottleneck the system right?

Keep into account that this rig is for 1080p gaming only and I would like the CPU to be powerful enough to support a next gen GPU for 1080p gaming, a gtx 3060 for example.

Do you think Ryzen 5 2600X is a good choice? Is it future-proof? Or should I prefer sth a bit more expensive and powerful like Ryzen 5 3600X ?
