TL;DR: Super computer, hanging/slowing down in windows 8.1.

So basically for the past few days, my computers been acting up on me. First i thought it was to do with my water cooling, so i bleed the system as much as i could extra and put some more water. Still didn't solve it. but did decrease my temp's by 2-3*C, Basically anything i do to do with explorer, its slow. Even hangs momentarily. For example, opening "This PC" it takes like 15-20 seconds. With my current hardware, it was good for the past 3-4 years, but now it's taken a turn for the worst. Another problem is that i can't really connect any disk drives. they come and go when i plug them in. They don't stay connected, i can't transfer files etc etc. Everything is updated, and i have BitDefender AV if that counts for anything.

My rig:
Asus maximus 4 extreme, latest bios
Intel I7 2600k oc'd to 4.6ghz (HT ON)
Asus geforce 590 (Dual Monitor)
OCZ Vertex 4 256gb to SATA 6gb/s
Western Digital black 2tb
Western Digital green 2tb*2
Corsair vengence 4*4GB =16GB
and my USB Peripherals are keyboard, Mouse, USB WIFI Card.

Possibility that your motherboard is dying due to your OC? I mean it's doubtful, but assuming you've had it OC'd to 4.6 GHz for the last 4 years, then it could be possible, in that your PC won't keep drives connected. Have you tried booting from a different hard drive other than your current one?

Currently i only have windows 8 installed and I DO have ubuntu on another HDD i've tried that aswell. But it does also freeze. I'm sure my mobo isn't dying due to the overclock seeing as it;s OC'ing the CPU and the CPU has been water cooled. It doesn't go past 50C, 20-25C on idle. Another thing, my programs run smoothly. I can easily play arma 3 on max or play netflix movies. Windows itself is freezing while chrome is fine. I've been waiting for 5m now for "MY PC" to open. I'm going to try and uninstall some stuff. And i'm not sure if this is connected or not, but i do have classic shell installed.

Perhaps your OS install is corrupted. If its been 3-4 years since your last clean install, do a clean install and if its still freezing, Id try a different power supply and check MOBO for shorts caused by dust or perhaps little critters? 3-4years for an OC Asus board is pretty good in my book. My 2 Asus X58 boards lasted about 2-3 years OC'd. Try a Gigabyte mobo next time...

Oh and one other thing you may wanna try. Use only two sticks of memory... And see what happens...

You might be right about that.I just cleaned the computer yesterday, so it should've been slightly better if it was the shorts. But yeah i don't think i've done a pure clean install of windows in over like 20 installs. I usually install ontop of, take what i need and yeah... i bet you're right. I'll try a clean install and see if it's better. and yeah, i've already tried the ram. Booted with one stick, same thing. tried two different ones, still same thing. doing 4 right now and yeah, same thing.
