Supposedly R480 out by Fall?

According to the Inquirer, <A HREF="http://www.hardware.info/nieuws.php?id=3189" target="_new">THIS</A> Dutch site (Isn't that Veeird?!?) says that the R480 will arrive by the end of the year. Also makes mention of the PCI-EX version of the X300/600 and R423/X880 by June.

All this fits' with <A HREF="http://www.3dcenter.org/artikel/2004/02-22_b.php" target="_new">3Dcenter's roadmap</A> and <A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1966" target="_new">Anandtech's Information</A> from earlier this year.

What do you (know) so far about R480? Any info at all?

Not enough, but the threads seem to imply added functionality, like the R350 improved upon on the R300. But hey we had little/no conrete info about the R420 up until release, and we still no very little about the R423 itself (it's not like the NV0 in that it's the same chip).

ScottC and Phial, yes that's what I'm thinking. I used to think the graphics card would dictect my next upgrade and I'd build around that, not I'm looking at the Graphics card as an extension of my MOBO choice than vice versa. And likely the price/benifit motive will come into play on the graphics card end now, and my focus will be on getting the 'perfect' (for me at the time) MOBO/CPU/MEMORY, and focus my funds there.

I was getting ready to spend all my money on a socket939 PCI Express system when they come out, but after reading dissapointing review of VIA K8T800Pro chipset, with 1000HT, don't think the Socket939's really worthy upgrade from socket754 anymore. Until of course Winchester, when AMD gets the speed pumped above 3.0Ghz, then i'll be buying it.

Video card, i can live with my FX5900, not for that long, but i can live with it for now, got it about 2 months ago for 149CAD, on Ebay it surprised me to see that 2nd hand FX5900 still go at ~270ish CAD!!

Anyways i'll be going to futureshop next weekend, to pick up a X800pro, benchy it, OC it, and return it.

I REALLY REALLY want to see how ATI's unified shader system works out.

Looks like it (pci express) will make 4X-8X look good.
8X gives 2 gigs of bandwidth, pci express will give 4. Even the new cards cant use up to 1.5 gigs yet.

We were always discussing the issue that ATI's been slacking off lately, crashman made a whole post on it, the fact ATI's just been sitting back, improving that same 9700 over and over. Surprisingly somehow holding NV back with the R300 architecture. We want to see something revolutionary, not evolutionary.

Yeah, unless ATI pulls out some kind of miracle out of their @ss for the R423, since Nvidia's just bridging theirs, PCI-Express seems useless for this gen, just like the Geforce4 MX440-8X.

For Ati, pci-express will be good for AIW. It has more bandwidth from gpu to cpu. This is good for HDTV.

I wouldn't expect a revelation between the performances of the AGP and PCI-E counterparts; the mere fact that these cards are available in AGP form is an indication of their limitations, IMO (although they are VERY fast). I think the really big jump in performance will occur when we have both DirectXNext and PCI-Express in our rigs...

By this gen of cards, I thought you were also referring to the Nvidia 6800 ultra. It's not in the same situation as ATI's card though as far as ev/rev goes.

Well I planned on both anyways.

Just now the crads didn't impress me as much, and now I will focus on getting what I feel is the best mobo/cpu,etc and then add the graphics card. I might add the X880XT/PRO/NON-PRO/WANNABE_LTD ASAFP, but that will depend on the time. I'm no longer as amped as I was.

But the mobo will have longer legs IMO than the graphics cards, and even like ScottC says, maybe the other sockets may offer some things. But I'll have to see. I assume the Opterons will continue to have socket 940 releases, and supposedly there will be socket 754 32 bit releases for a long time, so once everything is on the table THEN I will decide. No pre-ordering of ANYTHING... for now.

The K8T800Pro isn't bad (actually THG's review made it look much worse than many others), and neither is the nForce3 250, and SIS' solution looks to be rather interesting too, but really, I'm not concluding anything, positive or negative until I see the real/full goods.

AMD has IBM working on this for them. Never downplay IBM's ability to get something done (especially when they aren't in any particular rush or when they have marketing f*cking the situation by making false promises) when it not only benefits themselves, but also possible contract deals (read: opportunities to make money).

This considered, I expect no more than 70% of the TDP of the 130nm parts at the same clockspeeds. Not to mention a 2nd stepping that should prove to be excellent at OCing (like Scotty's D0 and the A64's CG), but not necessarily having a lower TDP (unlike D0, but like CG).

When all is said and done I plan to buy a 90nm 2nd stepping (U)LV mobile A64 and place it in an nForce3 250 desktop board with a Prommy GT (or whatever their best is at the time)...70% OC if I get lucky. Until then my non-OCable 3.06B should suffice.
