Hey everyone, my PC just [bad language removed] started giving me problems.
View: https://imgur.com/a/qIDHlH3
Here are my specs:
GPU: Asus ROG Strix Geforce RTX 2080 Gaming
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor @3.70 GHz
RAM: 16GB
Storage : 932 GB HDD ST1000DM003-1SB10C, 466 GB SSD CT500MX500SSD1, 932 GB SSD WD Blue SN570 1TB, 932 GB SSD Samsung SSD 980 1TB, 447 GB SSD KINGSTON SA400S37480G
System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
TLDR:
- Played intensive game, colourful space invaders appeared across both screens.
- Everything but my discord audio was frozen.
- Restarted PC, now there are wavy, white, horizontal lines on my screen that react to mouse/on-screen movements.
- GPU is no longer detected. 8GB VRAM is detected, but the name of my GPU is now "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter"
- NVIDIA App goes through driver installation process, but it doesn't actually install.
- As a result I cannot launch any games.
I HAVE TRIED THE FOLLOWING:
- Rebooting PC. (Lines don't appear in BIOS)
- Reinstalling GPU drivers
- Different Monitors & Cables
- Reseating GPU on Mo-bo & Reconnecting cables
- Leaving PC off overnight and coming back to it.
- Unplugging things from my power boards to relieve some power usage?
GPU HISTORY:
I bought this RTX 2080 used a few years ago in used condition. It would run games for 20 minutes max, then consistently crash with colourful artifacts. I suspect it was used for heavy mining. It still had warranty however, so I sent it for an RMA and got it back in perfectly working condition. I then used it with no issues for 2 years until yesterday.
WHAT HAPPENED:
I had just finished a 2 hour session on Outlast Trials, with discord open. I went to open Counter-Strike, and both of my screens were suddenly filled with evenly spaced, colourful, space invader-like symbols. Everything was frozen except for my audio, so I turned off my PC. Upon rebooting, I noticed that the screen was covered with horizontal, wavy lines (see attached image), that rapidly respond to mouse movements and on-screen animations such as the windows boot spiral dots, and l-click-dragging the mouse to highlight desktop icons.
The PC is functional; I am in fact using it to write this post now. What’s odd is that no programs or system info can detect my rtx 2080, but it does detect the 8gb of vram, and i dont have any other integrated gpu.
Despite my suspicion, I will soon try swapping the GPU out for a friend's one, to see if that helps. I will be updating this post as I try different things.
I reckon its just time to sell the GPU for parts, and bite the bullet on a new one, but before I do that, I would just like any advice that can be given, and for some questions to be answered.
Could this possibly be a DIY fix for a smart young fella willing to take some time and fine tools to the card itself?
Could there be a local specialist who could do this for me? (I live in South Australia)
Would ASUS accept their card back to have an inspection, despite the fact I've already used my warranty claim with them?
Thank you for reading. Please point out if I have missed any crucial details. I look forward to any response.
