Hi there you handsome guys and gals :)

I have a problem that drives me insane and which I have no fix for.

More specifically, over the last week or so, my internet connection gets disabled (and I get automatically disconnected from the internet as a consequence, obviously) for no rhyme or reason and at random intervals. The only thing I can say is that this happens daily, with some days only happening once or twice per days, other days happening over 10 times a day.

It doesn't even matter whether I'm working online or offline when this happens. If I am connected to the internet and I am playing solitaire for example, without doing anything else (downloading, updating, scanning, or anything else at all), well, if my computer feels like disconnecting it just does and peace :)

Now, for the technical part of it. I connect to the internet via a veeeeery old (obsolete actually) Thompson Speedtouch 330 ADSL modem connectable through USB2.0 (ye, I know I have an old PC, from 2007 more precisely)

Anyway, that's not the issue. I have been using this PC with the exact hardware, OS (Windows XP SP2 btw) and programs installed since I bought the computer but this problem only began to manifest about 7-10 days ago, sorry not sure exactly when cause I didn't think about recording this data as I thought it was something temporary.

Now, other than this sudden auto-disconnection nothing else really happens, at least not visually. You might not even notice you got disconnected if you didn't try to open a website in the browser.

After I get disconnected, the only way to regain my connection is to restart the PC. Nothing else works, at least not for the few things I know about troubleshooting such tech issues.

So, as I was saying: this stuff happens out of the blue sky and after I restart the PC I can reconnect again, but not before I am presented with a "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" error, followed by another tab similar to this that mentions another "generic host..." error. Sorry, but I don't remember what the other message says but if you really need or want to know let me know and I will take a screenshot of it and post it here for you to see.

Anyway, when this second tab appears (right after I log back onto Windows, and after I close the message with "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services") I only have 2 things that I can click on: to close the message and to view the technical details of the error I just encountered.

So anyway, out of curiosity I clicked on the "click here to view technical information about the error" (or whatever it said, something like that anyway) tab, and I saw 2 files created in C:\Documents and Settings\john\Local Settings\Temp\xxxx (where xxx is different each time the error happens) but the 2 files I am talking about seem to always (or at least in most cases) be the same. They are

svchost.exe mdmp
appcomat.txt (I am not sure if I spelled this second file correctly)

So, I can only view these specs while I keep that error tab opened, cause the instance I close it the 2 files along with the directories they are in get deleted.

Now (and this is why I decided to open this thread) what really bugs me is that 1,5 hours ago I just finished re-installing Windows and the usual drivers (for the hardware components of my PC) and all other programs that I usually use, and believe it or not the idiot error still occurred. If not even a fresh install of Windows can fix this error, I don't know what else can.

And btw, I did scan my PC about 3 or 4 times since the error began to manifest so often, and I did it with fresh installs of AVG, Malwarebytes, NOD32, and I think another program, yeah it was HitmanPRO I think. Some of these programs found the usual trojans and other malware that I let them remove even though they also flushed some applications that I was using, along with these :)

So, computer scanned for viruses? Checked
System partition re-formatted and Windows reinstalled? Checked
Nothing new and/or suspicious installed on the new Windows installation? Checked

Yet, my internet connection (not the icon in the tray bar, which always appears as active, but the real connectivity to internet) dies whenever it feels like and as often as it feels like :)

So, these being said I am hoping that you handsome folks can help me keep my temper and fix this (apparently) inoffensive (but annoying as hell) issue before I literally go crazy about it (joking, but still :) )

Oh, and just because I am already at it, here's EXACTLY what I installed on my PC after I re-installed Windows about 2 hours ago:

1) First, I installed the drivers for the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 4650) and sound card (Creative Sound Blaster X-fi Extreme Audio)
2) Then I installed the driver for my good old ADSL modem, which I told you it's an already obsolete Thompson Speedtouch 330 :)
3) next was latest versions of Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 8
4) Next on was the antivirus (AVG free edition)
5) Next was the java, adobe reader, adobe flash player, and adobe air (all of these drivers downloaded from their respective sites, so they can't be at fault for this issue of mine)
6) then bitcomet (a P2P program for downloading torrents)
7) Warcraft 3 was next (an online game that I have been playing for 10 years I think and never caused me any issue, so don't tell me it's the game cause I won't believe you :) )
8) next on was GOM Player (a video player similar to VLC, only more user-friendly and a bit powerful, too at a first glance)

I can't guarantee that it's not GOM Player who causes this, but I tend to believe it's not it since I've been using it for half an year and never caused me any issue.

9) next I installed the usual Winamp, Winace, and some Firefox add-ons.
10) next was Sopcast (a video streaming that allows me to watch football online directly in the browser).

Again, you might be tempted to think that it's these codecs, and/or applications that stream videos that could cause such things to happen, but please bear in mind that all these programs and applications I installed I have been using for years without running into one single issue. At least not as persistent and annoying as this one tends to become, even on a freshly installation of Windows.

So, that's about everything I did and after I finished installing all of these (which took me about 2 hours or so) I happily logged into Warcraft to play a game, when all of a sudden the game kept loading and I instantly began to freak out as I already knew what this continuous loading was the result of: yup, it was the result of the sudden disconnection from the internet, although all icons in the traybar are active, all processes in the Task Manager window seem to be working fine and everything in general seems to work flawlessly. Except for the fact that my internet is down until I restart the PC, after which this may or may not happen again, as per my machine's mood :)

Before I close this long and hopefully not boring post, I dare to say that I have a feeling (it's not a certainty as I really don't know too much about networking) but once in a while I get a hunch that usually gets true, and now my hunch is that this issue has something to do with the TCP/IP protocol of my PC.

Again, I am not sure if this is the cause or not, but I do have the feeling that if any fix will be found to this issue, then that's what we should start with inspecting/testing first.

So, these being said, I am ending this novel here and I am patiently awaiting for your fix to this.

Cheers! :)
