Switching from AHCI to ATA mode without reinstalling XP?

I have a Dell Precision T3400 configured for SATA AHCI. I need to switch to ATA mode to get a Promise Ultra 133 ATA adapter working in the system so I can use some legacy IDE drives. The problem is that when I make the change in the BIOS, I get a BSOD when XP starts with a "STOP: 0x0000007B (0xBA4C3524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"
This is due to XP trying to use the AHCI driver to access the drive. Is there any way to get XP to load the ATA mode driver wirhout doing a reinstall of the system? All I have is the Dell recovery disk and that will cause a complete system wipe.

I read many posts on this. It is possible but its not recommended. Why not purchase a SATA card with IDE connections. That's the way to go!

I did try a Promise SATA150 TX2+ card which did work with the MB set to AHCI.
The issue is that I need 2 IDE ports due to cabling issues (I want to add a DVD ROM and a HD but the mounting points are at opposite ends of the case, plus it's not a good idea to put those devices on the same port since the DVD ROM will hamper the performance of the HD).

Why not use those IDE devices as internal or external USB Devices. Thats what I do when I need to go legacy. That dell should be able to boot off of USB.

OR Have you tried the extra long IDE cables?
