My system is exhibiting extremely erratic behavior. It was fine yesterday, but as of a few hours ago my games are running at extremely low framerates with severe aliasing. In addition to that, certain apps are failing to start/load/launch, lag when running, fail to display properly and crash/hang when attempting to close.
There are all sorts of display issues. Brave browser loads a flat color if opened normally, although sometimes it can display correctly if opened in privacy mode. Task manager doesn't load icons and hangs on close. Lots of examples like that.
Some apps work fine. Some don't. There is no discernable pattern.
At first I thought it may be a monitor issue. I recently received a new 4k gaming monitor that's been running just fine for a week. This all started a few hours ago after I plugged in a DP cable for 240hz and set both the monitor and Windows to run at 240.
However, I have unplugged the DP cable and went back to HDMI and put all settings back to 120hz. The problems persist.
I also plugged in an external speaker set since yesterday but I don't see how that could be the issue. There are no driver or software apps or updates for it.
I have restarted my computer. Uninstalled and reinstalled Radeon Adrenalin and all graphics drivers, with a factory reset. I have reinstalled the latest microsoft update and restarted. I have rolled back to previous microsoft updates and restarted. I have fiddled with all manner of display and monitor settings. I performed a factory reset on the monitor. Defender has reported no activity.
The only thing I've thought of that I haven't tried is to plug in my old monitor and see if the problems persist. I am reluctant to do so, however, given the effort involved. But if it's an issue with the display, then why are programs having performance issues?
The timing of this happening immediately after plugging in the DP cable and enabling 240hz settings is suspicious, but why would the issues persist after reverting back to HDMI and 120hz?
I can only surmise that there is a problem with my SSD somehow. Or maybe a graphics card or processor issue? The only solution I can think of is to reformat, but you can understand why I am reluctant to do so.
