Question System restarts

Hi,

My Dell Precision t5500 keeps restarting in windows 8.1.

It restarts while windows is loading, at login, and in windows and are not logged in the eventviewer.

The system is stable in bios, pre windows boot, and in safe mode.

I changed the power supply, the videocard, and ran a memtest86 which passed.

I uninstalled the videocard drivers and the system was stable until i looked at a lot of thumbnails.

The temps are good, the fans not spinning up unless under load (which can be difficult to do).

System did not crash with a massive mp4 compression workload from ~12 programs running at once.

I plan to run driver guide and reinstall all the drivers.

Does anyone have a better driver install solution?

I've checked installed programs and see nothing out of the ordinary.

What else could be causing these restarts?

A component like videocard, psu, RAM, networkcard, soundcard, mobo, processors.

Drivers.

Programs.

Bad configuration.

I'm at a loss here.

I plan to install linux and see if that helps.

Any ideas?

How much ram do you have and how fast is it?

Try using one stick of ram at a time. If the problem persists, go next stick. That way you can rule out memory.

I tried 2/9 sticks one at a time and the problem is still there.

I ran a memtest86 on one of the sticks and it passed twice without errors.

I am wondering if the low voltage on the cmos battery is a problem?

Safe mode and pre-windows continues to be stable.

I dont have internet right now which complicates things.

If i had internet i would download driverguide.

are you using full capacity of the ram?

and have you reseated the cpu, reset the bios by removing the cmos battery, or replaced said cmos battery?

It turns out it's a bad mobo.

I had a power surge from turning my 6 plug off too slowly before unplugging the computer.

I fried a bunch of components.

One thing I cannot be sure of though (that bothers me) is that while working on transitioning to my new computer, I put the RAM on the new computer's metal case.

When I booted the new machine, the BIOS showed a RAM stick failure in DIMM slot 1.

I removed the RAM stick and eventually replaced it.

Either 1) the RAM stick was bad and assisting in causing restarts
or 2) I shorted the RAM stick out when it touched the new computer's metal casing.

I might not ever know.

The original T5500 could have more damage than what I previously thought.

A shorted out mobo can lead to other components failing.

I tried complete new RAM in the machine and it still automatically restarted.

I'll replace the motherboard.

The one thing I am hoping is that my processors and riser card are not damaged.

when touching any pins together on metal, you can short out the component.
