System standby disconnects internet and wont go back on automatically

We have a fast cable modem and I am always hooked to the internet. When I put my Vista 32 bit PC into system standby and then come back to Windows, every time I have to manually repair and reconnect the internet. On my XP32 system the internet automatically reconnects instantly as well as many other computers around the house. It seems like an easy fix, but not sure where to start. Any pointers?

I have the same problem with my Packard bell imedia x2416, I took the first Pc back complained about this fault and they replaced with new PC, but still got the same fault. To re-connect I have to unplug ethernet cable and plug back in sometimes takes several attempts.
Have just posted same question myself, if I get an answer will pass it on.

I am not sure and will try this, but I am wondering if its the difference from Hibernate to system standby. Maybe the PC is in Hibernate mode and thats what causes this and not actually in standby. I am not sure which one it is set at now, but I will look into that further.

Interestingly, I have the opposite problem. My XP will loses its connection occasionally and fails to reconnect until I do it manually. Windows 7 stays connect regardless of what I do to it.

This may be a setting of your Network Inteface Card (NIC). Right-click My Computer, click Properties and then choose Device Manager in the right hand pane (Vista). Find your NIC under Network Adapters. In the Properties section choose Advanced on check your settings in there. On mine, Flow Control is the only one disabled. I have Interupt Moderation, Low Power Link Speed and Wake Up From Power Off enabled, though your particular NIC may have different settings listed...gwb56

Within the APM Configuration: BIOS
"Power On By External Modem" setting (disabled by default).
This allows either settings of enabled or disabled for powering up system when the external modem receives a call while system is in Standby mode (Soft-Off Mode)
#NOTE: The computer cannot receive or transmit data until the computer and applications are fully running. Thus, connection cannot be made on the first try. Turning an external modem off and then on while the system is off causes the initialization string that turns the system power on.
You may want to have a look in your BIOS settings that this is disabled.

So I popped the case and found I had an ASUS am3, then I found the manual, which I had never previously read. The manual was very interesting and I may update the BIOS later today.

However the sleep settings aren’t relevant to the problem at hand. The connection is lost part the way through a program that I wrote, which starts at 5:15 each morning and runs for times varying from 45min to 2 hours. It downloads files from one site, processes them and uploads them to a second site. The problem can occur anywhere from 15 min to 45 min into the program

The error message I get is #10054 ‘Connection reset by peer’. It is at this point the Internet connection is lost. I don’t know if the error causes the connection to go down or if the error is a result of the connection being lost. The program then beeps every 5 seconds till I do something about it. This machine has an ISDN connection to my ISP and is the only box connected.

The last time it happened was Friday 14th May and previous to that Thursday 22nd April. I have uninterruptible power supplies so it is unlikely to be a power glitch at my end, and there is nothing in the logs to indicate a power problem.

I would be nice to stop this from happening, but I would be content If I could reconnect to the Internet under program control. I have yet to discover how to do this.

Len, It appears that your connection is being reset possibly by your ISP due to idle time with the connection. I'm not sure, but the Event Viewer in XP could give you more insight into the issue by giving more details as to the error. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427 The connection loss will give you the 10054: Connection reset by peer error. I sure wish I could be some help to you, as this has to be pretty frustrating to you by now. Good luck and I do hope you find a fix...GWB56
