Question System stops responding, can't turn off PC

And I don't mean it doesn't respond to me clicking the shutdown option. I can't even move the mouse. The machine is still running, but nothing except the monitor power button responds to anything. I leave the PC for maybe 20-30 minutes and when I come back its like this, completely locked. The only way for me to shut it down is to turn off the power on the surge protector/pulling the plug. This is the second or third time this has happened. Nothing is wrong with my components or anything, my drivers are updated, I don't have a virus and I haven't touched any settings. Am I being f*cked by a recent windows update or something?? I can't find any sensible explanation for it, windows event viewer is completely empty in the timeframe it was borked
