System Temporarily Slow After Unlock

Whenever I unlock my laptop, the whole system runs incredibly slowly for about 30 seconds - moving the mouse is almost impossible (it moves but jumps from one point to another rather than moving smoothly).
I've also seen video ads on websites running very slowly so it doesn't appear to just be a mouse issue. I also locked and unlocked while creating this question, and any typing I do doesn't appear until the system stops running slow (then everything I typed appears, so it is reading inputs).

I have a Windows 10 Enterprise laptop, 16GB RAM, i7 core, SSD drive, so it's not a slow machine. It's a work laptop so I don't have much more info on hardware or how it was built. As far as I know it's also quite new.

I use a DisplayLink dock but have tried the laptop without connecting to this, and it does the same thing.

One other time I noticed this happen (only for a few seconds rather than 30 or so) is when I changed my desktop background. Could be a red herring though.

Any help appreciated. I've Googled but not found anything similar to what I'm experiencing. The IT guys at work are also looking into it but haven't spotted anything so far. They tried (I think) disabling network connections to rule that out, and it still happened.

Thanks in advance.

Could be you just need some driver update, perhaps stop some unnecessary application that is getting in the way of things.

Open Task Manager (CRTL + ALT + DELETE) and see what processes, services, etc. are taking what resources: CPU, memory, disk.....

Most likely you will find something that is taking a large percentage of some resource. And not giving it as would be expected.

Could be some application trying to "phone home". Or some update that is not working as it should.

You can also use Resource Monitor and Performance Monitor to delve into what your laptop is doing or tries to just after unlocking (via Win + L).

Identify the culprit involved and then you will most likely be able to find a fix.
