there have been other posts like this, however in most the gpu is new or pc has not been used for a while.

A couple of days ago my pc shut down while I was playing some games.
after this it would not boot. the only thing I could do that worked was to take out the gpu and then it works again. I have also tried a different pcie slot in case one was broken.

can anyone give some advice? what could be the issue?

my setup:
gtx 970 evga ftw
intel i7 4790k
500w silver power 80 plus
gskill ram 16gb
gigabyte g1 sniper

What *could* be the issue? A lot of potential causes.

Given it won't boot with the GPU, but will without - it's most likely that either the card itself has failed, or the PSU is incapable of powering the whole setup any longer. Options would be to try the 970 in another setup (with a sufficient PSU!), or try a known working, quality PSU in your setup.

The basics of trying to boot with only a single RAM module & clearing your CMOS would be quick & easy first attempts though - any luck with the GPU installed & only one RAM module?

thanks for the fast answer.
I tried booting with one ram module and it did not work.
I do not currently have acces to another system to test with.

The computer boots if I do not have the GPU power cables in and it is still in the slot (the fans react when turned on, they do not spinn but seem as if they get some power when system starts), does this help in any way?
