what could be causing my compaq presario m2000 to not recognize the onboard harddrive?

I always prep a new hardrive with the manufacturer's software, and set it as the boot or secondary drive. Maxblast 5.0 works with seagate and maxtor drives; others have similar software. You can download and burn a copy for free; it's included in retail boxed drives, and the cd acts as a boot device.

it could have failed, can you boot off a bootcd and then test the HDD?
