I recently purchased a Dell T7500 computer
Namely, the claim that the fastest CPU upgrade I could get for this machine was an Intel Xeon w3690 3.4Ghz. I bought this CPU, installed it in the socket on the motherboard, and upon firing up the computer all I got was the blinking lights 2, 3, 4, with the fans just whirling around at high speed. The computer did not boot. The original chip in the machine was a x5660 CPU at . I read in another Forum somewhere that the w3690 CPU will indeed work with this machine, but I don't know what I can do to get it to boot. I assume that I had to start with updating the BIOS of the machine first. So, I already updated it to A18 bios version.
I also tried a w3680 but it gave the same issue aswell.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Solution
The Dell T5500/7500 motherboards are based on the Intel 5520 server chipset so dual QPI link CPUs must be used, even in single CPU operation. Here is the compatibility list.

W3680 and W3690 are single QPI processors and will not work in your system. Fastest for your machine is X5687 = 4-core, or X5690 = 6-core. Have tested each in my T5500 systems and work flawlessly.
