Using my phone to do this I have a Dell optiplex 790
Gpu is 1050 ti
12 GB ram
550w Corsair
I7 2600 processor
Windows 10

I started. My PC and saw some sort of error. Anyways I tried to repair and it just got stuck trying to load windows. Tried reinstalling with the same windows 10 bootable usb device I used before but I kept getting black screen of death upon installation as soon as I made it to windows desktop and moved my mouse. I was able to get some windows updates installed after sever attempts at wiping my hard drive and reinstalling windows. Only to have my PC freeze during the update restart. I tried with a different windows iso and the same thing happened I was able to install windows updates then it froze when I tried to restart my PC to finish the updates. My hard drive is 1tb ssd but is almost 6 years old . I'm guessing my hard drive is starting to crash? Any advice? I'm having hard time getting windows to load with two different isos.

Solution
the problem occurred a few days after I installed the ram. it was working good for a few days.

I tried restarting my pc again and it failed to load without doing any updates... I took my old ram out and left my matching 4gb ddr3 (8gb total) in my pc. My computer loaded fine and ive had no serious problems yet but I thought I fixed this a couple times already..

I also managed to cut my finger to the bone dang near working on my pc.. I think the bleeding finally stopped but im not sure don't want to take the bandage off to break the clot that's building.

Keep the new RAM out of the system and let me know if everything is ok later. RAM instability is a pain and this is why people always recommend that when you upgrade your ram...
Just ran it. I'm not an expert but pretty sure there were no errors other than f parameter not specified. My computer somehow changed back the updates it tried making so now I can load up windows and get to the desktop but I'm afraid if I try to update windows again it will freeze. What should I do from here.

I woke up and ckdsk was finished idk if it found any errors. I then got the courage to try to update windows again and it froze after the restart again. Please someone tell me what is going on how do I fix this?

Just ran windows 10 troubleshooting - windows update tool it says it fixed some problems with my computer that were preventing me from completing windows updates but who knows well see like I said I think next step is verbose mode but the troubleshooting tool said to try windows update again so Im going to do that. Ill keep you updated. Im going to fix this eventually.

It all started with my computer shutting down with some error code. Then it would give me black screen of death so I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled windows. I tried two different windows isos. And everytime I went to restart computer for windows updates it would freeze trying to load windows again. I just bought a ssd for 110 at best buy. I got past the first round of windows updates then when I tried to restart on second round my computer froze loading windows. Idk what to do besides replace my pay I really don't want to do that and already wasted 110 on a new ssd

Well I just spent 110$ on a solid state drive and was able to make it through the first round of updates just to have my computer freeze when trying to restart for the second round of windows updates..... great...……………..
Can someone please help me? Im about to just give up and run my computer without all the important security updates.

Mobo: Dell OptiPlex 790 mini tower
PSU: Corsair cx550m 550w
HD : 1tb western digital ssd (also have spare 1tb hd)
GPU: nvidia gtx 1050 ti
Ram : 12gb ddr3
CPU: i7 2600

I don't know how to check error codes. My windows just freezes when I try to update it. It says I need to perform a restart to finish updates. So I click restart starts back up then freezes before windows loads. I have to restart in safe mode to get it to undo changes and be able to get back into normal desktop. Here are the updates that failed to install.

Update for windows defender antivirus antimalware platform - (KB4052623)

Cumulative update for windows 10 version 1903 for x64 based systems (KB4574727)

I was able to install a few updates.

Right now it says I have windows 10 x64 bit home version 1903.

I just used rufus to make a bootable usb iso for windows 10. I selected the usb as my boot device.. deleted everything off my old hard drive. Clicked next then just installed windows. I just bought a new SSD 1tb. (I read that as long as its under 2tb my computer will run it cuz anything over that used ntfs or w.e) and tried installing windows on the fresh ssd. Same thing happened between both hard drives except my ssd I was able to get at least one round of updates completed.

I plugged my phone in my comptuer during the second update restart. Maybe that has something to do with my computer freezing? Im just guessing. IDK Im trying to install the updates again see what happens. I don't think its my psu I feel like my computer would be acting more sporadic. But idk. Right now Im downloading some video games I just cant install the last update for windows defender and the 1903 update. Idk I might try again later just seeing how my comp runs without them for now.

This won't be easy. Here is why.

- It could be your RAM. You have 12 GB. You're mixing RAM brand and model right? RAM instability does create issues like this or if you run the RAM at a too high speed. Your Ryzen 2600 should be able to run the RAM at 3200MHz but testing them at 2933MHz would tell you if it's the RAM. I highly recommend you do a MEMTEST86 on the RAM or try with only 1 stick of RAM.

- It could be the drive port you're using on the board. Should try another SATA Port if this is a SATA SSD. You're not using the same SATA cable from your old SSD on your new drive?

- It could be the PSU like I said up there. I would have replaced the PSU before the SSD.

As for Windows 10. You should download Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft and do a Windows 10 version 2004 install USB. The most recent Windows 10 version.

Yes Im using the same SATA cable / port as my old hard drive. Again, I realized I didn't have a SSD before I was actually using 1tb Hard drive and it was about 6 years old that's why I figured I would try that first. The power supply is only about 4 years old and is considered a good one (it also gives me more pins so I can use my GPU on this MOBO.)

I added 4k more ram about a week ago and a 2600 i7 processor the week before that. I will test my ram. I pretty much have my computer maxed out and spent too much money in the last few weeks for this not to work..

Like I said its working Im able to play world of Warcraft and stream without any problems so far. Im just missing a couple updates. They don't seem essential. Idk Im just tired at this point. Been trying for at least 24 hrs trying to fix this now. Like I said I just bought a new SSD for 110$ this really isnt money I can be spending either.

That PSU is average. It's right after the Corsair VS series which is the bottom model of Corsair. I would not say that this is a "good" PSU. It's an entry PSU and it's 4 years old. Your PSU has a 5 years warranty with Corsair. You're still under warranty.

If your drive was an HDD of 6 years old yes it could have been that but like I said these kind of issue is normally caused by the PSU. That's the first part that should be replaced when you have these issues because there is a 90% chance that's it is the PSU.

You added 4GB of RAM a week ago and a 2600 CPU. This should have been mentioned up there. Did the issues started after you upgraded the RAM and the CPU? If yes...then the possibility of the RAM being unstable (because you're using the new one with the old ram) just increased. Like I said. Mixing different brand and model of RAM not from a RAM KIT can cause this. Remove that new RAM and leave your 8GB only. Remove the XMP/DOCP profile of the RAM in the BIOS and run them at default speed of 2133MHz.

I know you're tired and I understand but you should not spend 24 hours to try and fix something that is probably hardware related. This isn't just a software issue. It's software instability issues created by hardware.

In your case at the moment and with the new information you just told me it would be like this below.

RAM instability -> PSU -> Old HDD drive -> Motherboard -> CPU. In that order.

the problem occurred a few days after I installed the ram. it was working good for a few days.

I also managed to cut my finger to the bone dang near working on my pc.. I think the bleeding finally stopped but im not sure don't want to take the bandage off to break the clot that's building. Doesn't look like ill be streaming even if i get my pc working.

Keep the new RAM out of the system and let me know if everything is ok later. RAM instability is a pain and this is why people always recommend that when you upgrade your ram capacity that you remove all older ram and replace it with a RAM KIT so there is no issues like this.

We don't know yet if the RAM is the cause but since you added the RAM and the issue started not long after it does point out to the RAM. Let's remove the RAM from the equation by just keeping the old ram in your system for a while and see.

Solution
Im only using the two sticks of ram I just bought and took all my old ram out. I then tried to reinstall windows with only the two matching sticks of ram. I was then able to complete all windows updates with no problem. So far no problems.

Seems to have been a ram problem. I was using complete different types and sizes of ram hoping I would be ok.

Ill give it a day or so but seems to be fixed thanks for the help. Im just worried about my finger now, i sliced it real good.
