I'm running XP Pro and want to free up HD space, with the disc clean-up feature the temporary files is not checked off, what would happen if these files were deleted because it would free up considerable space. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Nothing dramatic or even nothing at all. The temp folder is where the installations decompress their files that they need for the installation, and where programs store temporary files(thus the name temp).

No program should rely on files in the temp folder thus you can delete any files in it without fear.

In ancient times they had no statistics so they had to fall back on lies

It's safe to delete the temp. files. Also, remember clear out your temp. internet files in internet explorer, and turf any unused programs or games if you really need the space.

You can clear out C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch periodically as well. Any program that needs a file in there will create a new one.

If you want to clear even more space, do a search for the files starting with ~(i.e. search for ~*), and delete them all.

\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

it is hidden system folder, you won't see it until "Hide protected ..system folders/files ..blah blah blah" will be disabled.

That folder keeps copy of every system file in \system32 folder in case one of those files will be deleted or else, system copies original from \dllcache to "save the system" from "corruption", kapish'?

I have 400MB in that folder. Why would I want to delete that? Will it restore the ones it needs like the prefetch folder will?

""Why would I want to delete that?""

as far as I heard you, you wish to clear some space up on HD, or have I misunderstood you?

""Will it restore the ones it needs like the prefetch folder will?""

Windows will ask you for CD if it will not find anything there.
