Primary Hard Disk Self Test

Is the HD gone? Please Help me It's a HP mini.

That's not a good sign but does not necessarily mean that the drive is just about to fail. I've got a HDD that has done that for about a year but still works ok. It does have some bad sectors though, so I'm looking to replace it in the future. Can you post a screenshot of the SMART data with HD Tune or HD Sentinel?

I have the same here and cannot boot up this HP with Vista. Any ideas?

When does it give the message "read element of the test failed"? At boot screen? In my case it was when I ran the self-test with HD Sentinel, but I assume that can't be it in your case if the OS won't even start.

Drevin - This HP M8300F comes with the message when I ran the self test on channel 4. The HD is a WD 320GB factory installed. This PC comes with 2 of them, one on Chanel 3 too, which tested out OK.

I am looking for any tricks to get this PC going again. Any ideas?

Does it give an error when trying to boot to OS? Did this problem appear at the same time as the read error warning?

The HDD could be on its way out, so backup first if you have any important data there. If you just want to try to get it to boot again, maybe could try a recovery/repair disc if you have one. My knowledge of Vista is limited as I'm still an XP user.

After the upgrade installation it needed a re-start. That's when it happened and machine stops after MS files loading, and stops at a blue, blank stop screen. I tested the HD after this (F8) and nothing has helped.

I tried the recover disks (3), Safe Mode, both strands at the blue stop screen.

Try this, dismantle the hard disk from the mini laptop, take it to a Desktop PC, plug into the SATA and Power, then turn on the pc, when the pc boots up, it will ask you to checkdisk (automatically run a chkdsk for you if the disk is problematic), let it run and fix all the problems, see if you can read the data inside the disk after that.

If you can, then turn off the Desktop, and unplug the harddisk. Replace the hard disk into the mini and boot up.

Hope it works for you as it had worked for me.

what is the difference if im using enclosure, so i plug in to another laptop via usb? i've tried it, and the other laptop can't detect mini hp harddisk.
