I have always heard flat displays referred to as LCD (Liquid Crystal Displays). Now I'm seeing some new kind of abbreviation showing up. TFT?! How does it translate? And why is it better than the good old LCD?

a TFT-LCD is still a LCD. LCD simply means "Liquid Crystal Display". TFT stands for the way the pixels are switched on/off. TFT = "Thin Film Transistor" means for each pixel there's a small transistor on the substrate to switch the the pixel on/off. TFT's are often also called "active" LCD's since the tranisistor is an active (and much faster) switch than the older method used on so called "passive" LCD's.
picture quality and response time are much better on a TFT-LCD than on a DSTN-LCD. but the TFT's are more expensive too.

respect!
