Gartner mentioned virtualization among the most significant computer trends at this time, a shift from applications to apps, the emergence of the self-service cloud, much more mobile devices that enable anywhere, anytime computing as well as an ongoing trend of consumerization, in which new technology trends are developed and shaped in the consumer space and then adapted by businesses.

So all that CRAP is considered "progress"? Go to hell.

I'd say yes, if personal, private clouds became the norm and home/mobile bandwidth was able to accommodate demands. I could definately see homes being more centered by a home "server" that streams media to tv/mobile devices, applications to tablets/notebooks/node desktops. Trusting of all your data with a 3rd party vendor (that you have to pay for) will keep the Cloud race from really hitting the mainstream.

As soon as I can get 1 Gbit/s internet service at my house for $10 a month I will believe that the cloud is the future of computing.

Until then I think the individual computer will live on and I don't see me getting internet that fast by 2014... and maybe not even 2024

I keep my stuff on my server and don't share it on the CLOUD. Using the cloud is exposing yourself to privacy issues.

I don't need any support to do these things for me. I have my own integrated multimedia / network at home.

[citation][nom]dgingeri[/nom]Heck no. There is no way most people will go trusting their data storage to Microsoft, Google, or some other outside company. I certainly don't trust them. Currently, I consider it naive to store your documents "in the cloud" without specific laws in place on what companies can do with that data. There is simply no guarantee that it won't be given out to other companies at will. To simply trust a company won't do things like that shows a person is extremely gullible.[/citation]

I hate to disagree with you because I honestly wish most people would think that way but this is where apple logic comes in "customers want something which just works" Many people don't even bother to think about the possible consequences unless they are paid to, very little thought goes into what happens when it stops working completely or as advertised until it does.

The only way I will ever use "the cloud" beyond simple sync is when my own PC is serving up my data to my other devices. I love my tablet for web surfing but it will never replace my PC for other uses, it's far too impractical.

I was thinking more of a 'local' cloud, like VMs-- rather than having somewhat powerful PCs in hundreds or thousands of cubicles.

Even in your own house-- if you have a couple of PCs and laptops, that you upgrade/replace every couple years, what if instead you had a powerful server in your basement and everything else ran VMs? You really never need to replace any of the clients unless something fails and a single upgrade to the server benefits all of the clients.

The more personal data i keep off the net the better. Screw facebook, screw the cloud, screw any of that crap. My data will stay in one place, on my computer.

On an unrelated note...

"More IPS throtting back the service to the top 5% of highest bandwidth users!"

lolno.

Why does tom's keep posing this "OMG DEATH OF THE PC" bull shit? Its wrong, it wont happen, it didn't happen the last 20 times people have claimed the death of the pc.

PS: Tom's..... YOUR A PC WEBSITE, IF PC'S DIE SO DO YOU.

What a load of steaming CR@P!!! I was sick of these articles two years ago and yet they are still being posted and these "analysts" are still WRONG!!! Way to go Tom's... you should know your readers are smarter than this! I wont even start to go into why this is all corporate analyticle BS, there is just too much wrong with these statements to list their every flaw, its a truly EPIC FAIL!

By 2014, LOL!

Any person who even has some technical knowledge would know there is absolutely no way this will happen in 2 years.

I feel like I just got trolled by this article.

You can't hav a complete cloud with unreliable network and connectivity. With the USA going at snail's pace in internet speed compared to other countries and companies like T-Mobile spending their money on Angry Bird slingshots, instead of updated/new radio towers, I can't see this happening anytime soon. Much less by 2014.

Not to mention I'd rather have my personal documents right next to me, safe and secure rather than on an unreliable server hundreds of miles away.

Sounds like a bit of a reach.... I the ability to use my own "personal" computer thanks.... And a tablet...? Whatever... The only one that sounds promising is a asus padfone... Hopefully lives up to the hype. But .... in addition to a laptop and PC, not a replacement as such. To "Compliment" the devices... Frick people can be gullible.

Here's my prediction:

Google, Facebnook, and "cloud computing" will go the way of netscape, altivista, and myspace by 2015. Hey this is fun, I can make crazy predictions too. Here's another one...North and South Korea will unite by 2018 and become the 3rd largest economy in the world, surpassing all but China and the USA.

Another buzzword to excite the tech (?) webzine writers and bore the webzine reader, along with all the rumors about the next gizmo from Apple or Samsung or whatever. Looks like Tom's hardware is no longer worth reading ....

This is not going to happen. I myself don't want to be dependent on somebody else to do these things.

It does not cost me any monthly fees to centralize things on my server at home w/ fast access on my home network.
