the desktop looks to big on my 31 inches screen and i can't see the task bar please help

I just got a new desktop with windows 7 professional. When a connect it to my tv (31 inches) I am not able to see the full desktop. The taskbar and start button are missing and everything looks to big. Any help please thanks.

Right click anywhere on the desktop, press on "screen resolution" and choose a higher resolution. Probably 1920 x 1080. Get back in touch if it doesn't work
