Alright I am looking to buy a fan I have narrowed it down to the fop32 and fop38. The fop38 is 10bDA louder (twice as loud) but has more airflow. The fop38 has a Thermal Resistance of 0.316 C/Watt where the fop32 is 0.486 C/Watt.
Which is better? Has anyone actually used these fans and what result did they receive. Right now I have 1 gig T-bird on an Asus av7 and a stock fan running at 50c. I would like to be running around 1.1-1.2.
thanks

I have the fop 32 now. It is a good hsf, and will likely be all you need to oc at what you are looking at. I run a TB 900, and do not have it oc, but I run at 40o c right now. It goes up to 44 when I play games. The fop 38 will get you lower temps. (I actually have one on the way myself) but what I understand is that it is loud.

I had a FOP-38 but I ended up getting rid of it because it was so loud. My CoolerMaster DP5-6H11 is quiet and keeps my TBird-900 over 5C cooler then my FOP-38 ever did.

BTW I run at 42C, or 44C @ 1GHz (100% load)
Edited by JCLW on 02/20/01 04:50 PM.

The fop32 is more than sufficient in terms of performance. (I've got one myself) The 38 doesn't perform more than a couple degrees better yet it has this loud whine. That said the 32 is pretty loud. I can't imagine you'd be happy with the 38. If you *must* have the absolute highest performing air cooler out there there's the hedgehog, but for all but the freakiest freak the fop32 is the best option.

I have my 1.2G t-bird OC'ed to 1450 and it runs at 44-46 after several times through madonion. Playing quake3 for over an hour in the highest settings gives me 45C. I do not think it is disruptively loud, even my girlfriend can sleep in the same room as it without a problem (although that's not saying much, she sleeps during movies sometimes!)

The via HWM says it runs between 7100- 7363rpm, and it cools like a champ!

I KNOW I would buy another, without a question!

Hope this helps.

Sorry, I am running the FOP 38. (The FOP 32 runs at 4200 RPM)

Here is a great review of them head to head and the wbk38

Mounting given a bad name!

Stick the side opposite of the clip on the mount first, then stick the point of a ball point pen in the groove of the flex-clip side with one hand and push down. You then use a flathead screwdriver to flop the moveable clip over the bracket holder. Simple as drinking a beer.

These guys in the reviews act like it takes 2000lbs and 14 screwdrivers to put a friggin clip on. I can get it on an off in 2-3 seconds this way.

REMEMBER- PEN IN GROOVE, say it with me...

PEN IN GROOVE- (kinda like toungue in groove for all the carpenters and pie-eaters in the house)

I'm not saying it's like someone with a jackhammer standing beside you, but for 1-2 degrees I'd take the quieter fan. You're overclocking the snot out of that thing so the extra noise is probably worth it to you.

Actually Snrub I have seen many reviews that are not kind to the hedgehog. I just got my Arctic silver2 in the mail yesterday, cleaned the block off from the old white goo- generic thermal paste, (and no- it wasn't what you are thinking, sickos)
Anyways, the fop38 was running at 46-48C at 1400-1450Mhz under load, 42-44 idle. I am now running 39-43 under load and 29-34 idle. I need more data- longer run times, etc. for more accurate results, since it was only running for a hour.

I think I could attest that this stuff really works. My controlled environment of same everything proves it to me anyways!

How cool is that Fop 32 of yours running on a less powerful chip?

I don't know what temp I'm running because I don't have anyway to read the temps. :) However I've seen many a benchmark where the fop32 & 38 are very similar in performance. (see link) It's the same heatsink with a more powerfull fan in the 38 case.

Actually I just learned there's now a WBK38 which is bigger than the fops and has the fan from the 38. That could be interesting.

As for the hedgehog, I have seen a poor review or two myself. Not exactly sure why, but Anandtech found it to be good and I trust them second only to Toms and Aces. The unfavourable reviews have been from sort of generic non-name sites. http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1361&p=1

I have an FOP38 and its the loudest fan I've ever heard. If you take the special grate off that protects you from getting chopped the noise will go down a tad, but you must be carefull with your fingers around that 7000 RPM fan as my knuckle learned the hard way. It cools REAL nice if you get some good Thermal paste, some generic paste from Radio shack is working pretty nice for me right now but it is deffinitly a loud fan. I put mine underneath my desk in a corner with fans pulling air in and blowing it out and I don't notice the noise any more.
BTW I have a Tbird 700 overclocked to 800 because thats as high as it would go.

i would say wait and get the new Global WIn with a copper heatsink, but you said you already ordered so oh well. becuase copper has a much better thermal conduction to suck the heat out of the processor

Which one would be that one AntiPop?

I'm going 2 buy a Tbird1Ghz and i'm thinking of buying a eficient and NOT TOO LOUD hsf for it (fop32 or something like that)

Is the WBK38 the one you're refering to? I saw a benchmark of it and basically it performs as expected. It has a slightly bigger heatsink than the fop32/38 with the same fan as the 38. The result was an extra degree C or so.

yea snrub, thats the one im talkin about but the review i saw showed a 2 to 3 degree difference
before you buy a hsf you have to decide whats more important, effiency or noise: if noise is your primary concern then the FOP32-1 is a good bet (what i got im happy with it); if efficiency and cool cpu's are most important then go for a FOP38 or the newer copper version the WBK38
whatever you decide, make sure you get some Artic Silver thermal compound, the real stuff becasue that will lower your temps about 2 to 5 degrees C which is damn good for the money

Got my FOP 38 last night, put it on (replaced a fop 32-1). I will likely go back to the FOP 32-1 and let my kids have the 38 on the system I am building them. The thing is LOUD!

I think is kind of funny this thread got brought back up. Anyway I got a FOP 32 my TB 1gig is running at 42*c at 1200mhz. (before 50*c with stock HSF @ 1gig) I also took the old POS stock fan and put it on top of the fop32 fan with plastic MB stand offs. It dropped the temp by 1-2*c so what the hell never let a fan go to waste.

Somewhere, I think, on http://www.overclockedcafe.com/ I downloaded about fop30 wav files for all the fans. They all sound loud to me since I'm still sitting in front of my old P2 400, but the 38 sounds the worst. It's like a damn leaf blower.

I just posted a message with a link to a Mod for FOP32/FOP38 coolers in the Cooling forum. It shows you how to install an 80mm fan on the heatsink. Much quieter and a little cooler than the FOP32. Doesn't say how it compares to a FOP38 with the Delta fan.

I didn't realize the FOP32/FOP38 heatsink was so big.

Here is the link.
