Load.... The idle temps is what worries me..

Computer is about the same speed at desktop, but I relate that more to my old Windows Install.

Well, I put in my new CPU, and it's idling at 50-55C... Do I blame the Thermal Paste? It seemed like Cheap stuff, and I did the pea method...

That does seem awfully high. If you check out this http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/thermal-paste-performance-benchmark,3616-18.html as you see some no-name pastes can increase temps a lot.

Yeah... I'm prolly gonna buy some good, yet cheap paste(I don't think I need AS-5) and a fan to flow over my mobo's VRM's and CPU.

The paste I like is Gelid GC extreme XxD34THxX, it was a while ago I bought it so im not sure about the prices, but it wasn't overly pricey. it also got better temps than the legendary(lol) MX-4

That's a high idle indeed; does the case get decent flow through it? Regardless of paste, the cooler needs flow to be effective.

Anyone ever put a TFX PSU into a Case that uses an ATX PSU?

TFX? No, but you can get plates that will allow a SFX PSU to be used on ATX mount points. Look at some of the FSP SFX PSUs on Newegg, and you'll see the plate that comes with them. I've never seen anything like that for TFX PSUs.
Although they are a lot thinner, they are also much longer than ATX PSUs and won't fit in smaller cases because they'd hit drives.

Onus? What speed is your G3258 at? At 4.0ghz on the stock cooler I never see more than 64c benchmarking.

I've been OCing mine to 4.2GHz on the stock cooler; voltage on auto generally puts it in the 1.26v-1.28v range.

That's alot of voltage. I'm at 4.0ghz at 1.15v. Maybe I got lucky with a good chip?

Is the cooler same on all CPUs that ship from Intel, or do the more power-hungry processors have larger coolers? I'd love to see something similar to the 212 Evo with a high-end K series CPU.


... I know the 6600K doesn't come with its own cooler, but the price here is no lower than a 4690K.

the high end haswell chips shipped with the copper slug cooler while the i3s and lower end CPU shipped with the solid one.

Ah, you're right. Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I didn't care too much about the stock cooler anyway.

Since I've been testing mainstream boards, I've also kept to what a casual overclocker might attempt, using as many automatic settings as possible. If I were doing it for myself, I'd go into more detail in the settings. I may try that with the last H97 I'm reviewing, just to get a better idea what my chip can do.

Mixing old and new thermal paste is bad right??

I'm gonna see if I can get some better paste and do a nice clean rather than my rushed attempt...

CPU-Z and HWMonitor aren't showing the correct Vcore when I manually set it in the BIOS.

It seems I epically lost the silicon lottery since I need 1.3V just to get it to boot with a 4.1Ghz overclock. It's strange because they both show the Vcore fluctuating around .952V under load (and idle). Thoughts?

edit: I have successfully updated my BIOS to the latest version.

edit2: Just BSOD'd, going back to stock settings for now.

Yeah, no way. That's not right. Set it to auto and stock speeds and see what those apps say the voltage is.

Also, are you on Windows 10?

Yes I'm on win 10.

Actually from the start the voltage shown wasn't right. Stock is supposed to be near 1-1.1 right? It's fluctuating around .864 now.
