'' If Intel told them to stop, they should have outed Intel publicly'' I'm sure theres a gag order or asrock may not want to rock any boats .. like dealing with Microsoft , intel is a company you don't want to cross and get tied up in court

thing is if you look at k and non k chips of the same you do gine overckocking but you also loose a few features that the non k has ??

and with the skylake 6700 look how much power the k uses over the non k for that .2 out of the box ? [max turbo ] 25w difference ? wow

loks to me if wanting a efficient stable build the non k has you covered ?? you could go k and overclock but no gurrentees on stability once you toy with it .. i'll take that 50 buck savings on that [opinion]

The standard BIOS from these companies never supported OC of non K chips so this announcement like others is not really telling the truth.
The BIOSs that do support OCing are listed as Beta.
Of course these BIOSs were never going to be approved by Intel so no points are awarded for pointing that out.

I and many others have DLed the list available so enthusiasts who like to experiment and explore tech, much like Tom P did at the start of this site, can enjoy this pursuit.

ASUS MSI GIGABYTE ASROCK

All have OC for Non K chips beta BIOS available here

There is a Guide here also

Intel always rates their CPUs higher TDP wise than they are. The Core 2 QX9650 was rated at 130W TDP as well. The reason is because it is unlocked meaning it can be overclocked highly, beyond what the normal TDP would be. That extra 200MHz to the 6700K is not adding that much more power draw to the CPU.

As for why ASRock dropped support, most big mobo makers are not going to go against the wishes of the CPU company, AMD nor Intel. I honestly think AMD is a bit too lax in some ways, such as with the CPU unlocking with the Phenom IIs. People do call this a "feature" but it is not quite a feature, it was never intended nor was the ability to unlock turned off cores on Phenom IIs.

Either way all we can do is wait and see how it plays out.

''This skylake launch has been a disaster''

why I suggest to just stick with a proven haswell and use it and skip skylake and see what comes next -- you got to look through the hype and smoke screen and see it kinda limited [sucks] lol [opinion]

just something about when intel does that split memory [775 with ddr2 and 3 skylake ddr3 and 4 ] = stay away [lol] then no xeon support /limited overall cpu support removed certain usb support and then seems to want to hog tie you to win-10 and so on and on .........

why do I need / want all that ?? haswell still lets me do it all with ease , but that's just me and how I see it ..

never did a x build so cant say on it I guess the raid thing with them I see around maybe ?? [if that's needed ]

I years a go I did folding until they told me I had to keep upgrading my donated equipment for them .. so I spent on computer build -spent on internet - spend on power bill at no cost to them and that's not good enough for you ?? how bout I just turn you off and now you got nothing and i'll keep my money for me .. anymore you got to be a sucker to fall in to that deal with them -- I guess beggars can be choosey

well , its your money as they say ..

What are the minimum system requirements?

All computers can contribute to Folding@home. However, if the computer is too slow (e.g. wasn’t built in the last 5 years or so), the computer might not be fast enough to make the deadlines of typical work units. A Pentium 4 or newer equivalent computer (with SSE) is able to complete work units before they expire.

Folding part time (less than 24 hours a day) will increase the minimum system requirements to make the deadlines. In this case, it is up to the donor to determine how many hours a day are required to fold and still meet the deadlines with each computer.

now figure the AM3+ platform is going on 7 years old .. anyway weather it was a requirement or a recommendation notice from them it just rubbed me the wrong way and I unplugged them . that's all [this was like way back in 2001 or something ] cant say I miss it .. and the hand me down computer that would cost me for them I can donate to a local school / church / good will for a kid that cant afford one for school work [a lot more satisfying ]

anyway this is way off topic here

but that's at my cost for my use not donated at my cost - get it .. that's like me asking you for a money hand out and you try to give me a 5 and I tell you no all I can except is 20 or higher . .or you been giving me a 5 than I demand you give up 20's , don't say you would not think hard about just walking away ... but to each his own and you/we do whats best to you/us ??

Let's take WoW, for instance. A system that would play Vanilla really well, wouldn't play Draenor, at all. Software gets improved, hardware requirements go up. Also, folding doesn't take much, with the addition of GPU folding. Even a lowly GT 730 can complete work units in time, even part time. If you are serious about folding, you don't do it part time anyway, unless you pause it for gaming and such. Mine is folding away, whenever I am not using it, for something else.

well like I said if its something you want to blow your money on its all fine and dandy with me , no biggie I got better things to do with my money that involves me for my enjoyment like I said you do what you feel is best for you and what you enjoy doing .. I'm sure you get that nice smile and a pat on the back for all you do for them that makes it all worth it , just not me anymore that's all - I got local things to help out with right here at home community that I see results or my input I can see and touch or talk to shake hands make a impact that day --

don't you find it funny of all the research university's like Duke don't do this as well or have there program set up to do so ??

I have hit a bit of a wall, on the gaming side as well, as I play CPU bound games. I want something to last me a few years, so X99 build makes far more sense. F@H is important to me too. I have lost too many people to cancer and alzheimer's. If what I do can help even 1 person, it is worth it.

dang, maybe another reason to hang on to haswell as long as you can ??

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/01/skylake-users-given-18-months-to-upgrade-to-windows-10/

I understand theres neen for change but it sure looks like between intel and Microsoft your being strong armed to do it there way or else ?? I feel its all about the security and them getting to your data [all in the name of being sure your not a enemy of the state and keep tabs on all you do ] ... lol

you know I done computers for some time and by far no expert , but I don't guess I ever seen anything like whats going on today with all this .. its like theres something they want real bad and will go to any extreme to get you on it ,fast.. [there way or no way ]

This is something else people are taking way out of proportion and this has been normal for most generations of Windows. Do you think XP supports most of the new features in SkyLake? Their point is that they wont add in new feature support. XP supported HT but 7/8/10 is better at it (by far).

People think they will be forced to upgrade or install 10 or else the older OSes wont work, they will work. Instead of all the drivers being available through Windows updates you will need to install them from Intel/AMD, not that any decent system builder wouldn't be doing that anyways as I always do since Intel has better drivers than Microsoft for their products.

It is just another overblown journalistic tactic to get hits to get ad revenue. In 2017, when Canon Lake is out, people will still be able to install 7 and 8.1 without any problems and this will be a distant memory.

looks like skylake don't have too much support for much of anything to me just amied toward even more proprietary strangle hold , lol...

''people will still be able to install 7 and 8.1 without any problems and this will be a distant memory. '' really ??we will see ??

http://wccftech.com/intel-skylake-remove-support-usb-based-windows-7-installation-platform-specs/

so what will be removed by then ???

I understand you guys got to try to promote things here ,but....

you know AM3+ was the reason I went over to intel for my first time ever but I went and looked at this and seen how much choise and freedom you still have with a AMD build today not this hands tied crap as you now see with intel / windows/ skylake

http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/990FX%20Extreme6/?cat=Download

that's something you can work with and not leave you so hog tied .. ta its old and not as powerful but a hell of a lot more flexible and end user friendly [not saying anything wrong with haswell or lower ]

see with this I can run a lot of stuff on AM3+ today that now with intel skylake you do as they say you can , right ?? that shines a fresh new light back on poor old AMD ??

Promote what? We are not paid by anyone and we offer our extra time as moderators for free.

I read that article. This is the natural evolution of a PC. Older OSes, ones that are almost 10 years old, stop getting updates for new technologies. XP and Vista will also be in that same bandwagon.

However you can slipstream drivers into a Windows 7 installation disc, something most techs do anyways. Hell I not only slipstream drivers I commonly use I also make them AiO discs so I can use them for any version of 7 instead of having to keep each disc.

I can only imagine that you never saw how it was when Windows killed support for other ports back in the day. It has happened before and it will happen again. I personally hope Thunderbolt takes over for even USB as it is a superior interface.

I don't know man, it all blows for the end user in the end regardless I was impressed with NVidia that there gtx 960 still gets xp support . but you know with haswell you don't get xp support best I recall

I don't know what AMD has coming up ''next year'' [lol] time will tell

thig is wit the old a slower AM3+ I still can run everything I got around here in one box where with intel you need 3 builds to do the same [and one of them needs to be that older AMD ]

I look at a build and say now do I wat this and loose 80% of my programs or this and keep running all my programs [that I paid good money for to enjoy]

or have to re-buy just because it for 10 ?? now look at all that added cost as well or having a full retail disk and now having to go with something like steams crap for a game you all ready have ?? just don't add up to me . ya. that old amd looks real good on all that

even this newer amd platform has xp support as well

http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A88X%20Extreme6+/?cat=Download

as said time will tell

good luck......
