It's because the design cycle is a lot more than 3 months. How often do you see them releasing brand new GPU silicon.
By the time AMD release the 7970 I can only assume the GK 104 was way past the design phase. Not until the day the 7970 was release would they know how their 680 would fair against the 7970. It's a simple as that!

Fantastic article! I own a GTX 690 and to this day am incredibly impressed with its performance, how cool it runs, how silent it is and how impressive it looks. It's amazing to have a high end PC that runs cool and is quiet!!

What an excellent article. It's stories like this that separate Tom's from other news sites.

Also folks, articles like this take several weeks to write. It's not something that's completed overnight.

This was an interesting read no matter what kind of hardware you have/like. For all you AMD fanboys chirping about P90X or whatever, it's still under NDA for a couple more weeks. You think Tom's should publish a bunch of blank pages for you to drool over?
I liked how the only performance that was discussed was that of the components/cooling/fans etc. Great article.

Release date for Angelini's article this in depth about an AMD card = The 5th of never. Nvidia's leg has to be quite sore with all this dry humping. Angelini goes to Hawaii for GPU14 and takes a measly 3 pictures of a rumored titan killer at $600 yet writes a multi page article about a well known over priced rich boy POS GPU that can EASILY be smoked by 2 lesser cards in sli or CFX for less money. Oh nvidia oh baby I love you.

@ ddpruitt

Thank you from a fellow engineer. I was expecting a serious, in-depth analysis of GK-110 from inception to production, but realized this article's title was completely misleading after reading the first page.

Tom's quality of review article has seriously degraded over time. Tom's maybe gets off one halfway decent, technical article about hardware once every 2 weeks and then fills the rest of the void with lame "Best 'blank' for your money" or "Budget Build!!!" article/post. I almost feel like Tom's is in an identity crisis. It is almost like Tom's cannot determine whether to do hardware technical articles, tablet and/or phone test reviews, computer component test, or any other number of computer review fields out there. This so called article is just another example of that identity crisis.

I love how every single comment that doesn't have something good to say about nvidia is immediately down voted lol. Angelini you were at an event where a titan killer at $600(supposedly) was just released and a brand new series of cards and you have nothing to say... Why are you writing articles about a year old over priced pile of non relevant ART. The titan is GPU PRON, completely useless, over priced and irrelevant. Just pretty to look at.

How does writing an article about the 690 prevent them from writing an article about the new AMD cards in 2 weeks when they are released and capable of writing a review about it? He decided to write something on the 690, so what. Why does that bother you? In two weeks, I guarantee there will be an article about the new AMD cards, after the NDA is released.

" The experience he’s going for is getting into your car and turning on the engine. There’s a massive fan in there that’s really loud as it pours air across the components under your hood. But it’s not an issue in the cabin, and the noise you do hear isn’t offensive. Of course, if you have a GeForce GTX Titan you also know that, while it ships with a conservative fan ramp, it can also be tuned more aggressively if you’re willing to tolerate more noise."

A lot of cars these days have radiator/AC fans that ramp up slowly like a video card fan. Also the cabin fan. Nothing new. Cars did it first, video cards later 😉

Good to read an article on design, rather than on just speeds ands feeds. They are great looking chunks of metal, I'm actually considering getting my upgrade with a windowed case so I can actually see where my money is spent.

@cmi86, you're not being downvoted because we hate AMD. You're being downvoted because you're a moron.

If you hate nVidia so, that any mention of them causes you to fly into an uncontrollable nerd rage because they killed your dog and gave your mother herpes, why are you busy reading an article that clearly states in the title that it is a story of the development of an nVidia design? Also, why have a tantrum after reading it and coming to the realization that the title wasn't lying?

I really, REALLY appreciated this article.
I love technology, and I often find myself taking pictures of GFX cards, motherboards, and other internal components that most people don't care about aesthetically, and showing them off to my geeky friends. Only to find they don't appreciate it as much as I do. It's nice to know that there are people who share that love working for my favorite hardware review website.

@cmi86, Just because you are being downvoted doesn't mean the people who downvoted you are NVidia fanboys. I'm not, and I downvoted you.
I wish I could downvote you some more because you are an absolute Troll.
This article was for people who like the aesthetics of technology, not the performance. It's not about Nvidia or AMD. You obviously don't grasp that.

Great article.

Interesting article, I really enjoyed it. The Titan and 690 has pushed the performance figures for good competition from AMD.
Would like to see some price drops so I could upgrade soon.
Now with 4K gaming around the corner, we are going to need some serious gpu's to get the framerates. Peeps thinks these cards are expensive just wait .....4K gaming is going to become a hell of a lot more expensive!

Its about appreciating the beauty of the design. And it is beautiful.

Why do some people buy an Aston Martin? Because its fast? Sure. But mostly because Aston Martin designs some of the best looking cars. And they are over priced but that does not mean you cannot appreciate it.

I would never buy a Titan or a dual GPU card. Overkill for me as I stick to one monitor. But the design for the heatsink of the 690/780/Titan is very nice.

I thought it was AMD whop was supposed to have the bad drivers?

What happens if you do?

While booting Windows 8.1 Preview, the monitor refused to display a signal. I have never had a problem with Nvidia WHQL or BETA drivers in the past. This is a known problem with Windows 8 UEFI BIOS and SLI and these 331.40 BETA drivers.

EDIT: I have no problem with the latest 331.58 WHQL drivers. Thanks, Nvidia!
