Hello, everyone!

First of all, I'd like to point out that I couldn't find a good section for the matter at hand so I decided to post this here because - well, I'm doing a new build.

So, I've been feeling excited over the new build I'll be doing in the near future. One of the things I wanted was at least one USB 3.0 on the front of the case. Then it hit me a while back. What can and will I do with it? I did some research and it seems that I can't use USB 2.0 devices on it. Seeing as I don't have any devices that use USB 3.0, the whole point of getting one seems non-existent.

I tried looking for devices that actually use USB 3.0 but all I could find were a HD webcam and an external HDD/SDD. Still, there seems to be demand for USB 3.0 hubs, thus it's only logical that there're a lot of devices that benefit from the said connection.

Could someone possibly shed some light here? Am I overlooking something or is the whole thing pretty much useless for me?

Warm regards

The external HDDs are a pretty obvious choice. The transfer time is around 10 times faster if i remember correctly.

Your problem is the lack of other devices you could use your USB 3.0 for right? Just think about the devices that you hook up to USB 2.0 printer/scanner/mouse etc.. These devices just don't need a huge data-transfer.

USB 3.0 is propably good if you want too build a home mediastation where you can stream HD-Movies

read this it explains everything http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/usb-30-technology-explained/

Theres not a big need for it, but alot of cases come with USB 3.0 outlets, and so do motherboards. Its just a added bonus but theres not alot of products that really make use of it.

I pretty much agree. I recently built a cheap PC ($450), and didn't spend the money to go to a board with USB 3.0.
Devices like my Touchpad, and any portable devices I use are likely to not use USB 3.0. Sure, a faster USB Hard Drive is nice, but I already own a 2.0 USB External Hard Drive, and it barely gets enough use.

Faster transfer speeds with USB 3 devices is about the only benefit.

Alright, thanks for the input, everyone!

I think I'll be going with a MOBO that has a USB 3.0 connector or two should I ever get an external HDD. It's a tiny money saver not to get a case with USB 3.0.

Cheers!

usb3 fully compatible with usb 2. My laptop has a USB 3 port and I connect my usb2 flash drives with it.

Guys just to say, earlier this year I almost threw away what turned out to be a perfectly good bluetooth mouse as I thought it was unreliable. It turns out it was USB 3.0 causing interferance with Bluetooth in my laptop.

This issue doesn't seem to be widely known, but for anyone that stumbles across it check out this overview and tips for the bluetooth and usb3.0 problem - this site gave me some suggestions and now im using my bluetooth and usb3 devices without issue.
