Before I screw anything else up, here are the relevant links:

Deskstar 7K250 160GB, 7200RPM, Internal ATA/100 Hard Drive
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=314482&pfp=SEARCH
About $40 final cost, but I have to do $90 of rebate.

Seagate 200GB Ultra ATA/100 8MB Buffer ST3200822A-RK- Retail Hard
Drive Kit
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4008252#detailed
About $50 final cost, but also a bunch of rebate.

Both have good reviews, both seem on the higher end of speed and
reliability. Both have enough room for me to grow for a few years.
This is for a much used home/dev system. The Seagate is larger, but it
is mail order if I have a problem. The Hitachi is smaller, but I can
bring it back to the store. If I had nothing else to go on I would
probably coin flip, then ignore the result and get the Hitachi. Does
anyone have any advice?

(Ok, I checked. I have the drive names, I have the prices and the
purpose. I guess my error will be a new one this time.)

Oh, almost forgot, thanks everyone in advance. I have to say this is
one of the more interesting groups. Regulars here, and there do seem
to be many, have to be mostly giving help. After all, most people just
don't buy that many drives. It is not like a development or a
networking group where people can do lots of give and take. So,
anyway, thanks in advance even if I get silence.

Yes and no. I will use my old drive for backup for awhile. I figure I
will outgrow it, but able to backup important stuff, for about six
months. Then I plan on getting an internal SATA drive and use this
drive as my backup. Are these unreliable? I thought there were on the
higher end of reliability. Hitachi had some problems, but this drive
got good reviews. And I though that Seagate was better than WD or
Maxtor. Or do I have it all screwed up?

Oh, and I did make an error in the first post, I want to give two urls
(neither of which am I involved with).

http://www.hotdealsclub.com/ and http://dealnews.com/

They are bargain notification sites. They seem pretty good to me.

I would get a Seagate drive. 5-year warranty, lower before rebate cost,
higher capacity.

Nope, they are fine. And more reliable than external USB2/firewire drives.

Varys with the manufacturer basically.

Yeah, the old deathstar problem appear to have gone now.

That is basically correct currently.

You do have to wonder why they are running those drives out so cheap tho.

As near as I can tell, stores like to have one item in each area on
sale. Usually these are the items that are being phased out or they
are the items (Norton comes to mind) that are always on sale. In this
case the Seagate is the old model and likely the Hitachi as well. I
don't mind having a year old item in this case. I am waiting for 10K
rpm drives to come down in price, but that will probably take a 6
months to a year by my WAG.

Make sure you check the seller/reseller's ratings. You can find ratings at
Pricegrabber and www.resellersratings.com
Pay close attention to the negative reviews.
From my experience, if the rating is not at least 4.5 at Price Grabber or 9
at resellersratings, I'd stay away. There are plenty of resellers with same
or better.

I agree with you in general. But I have used Fry's/Outpost and they
are ok. And the other is in-store CompUsa. The links I gave are not to
stores, they just report various bargains around the net or in-store.
I assume they are paid by the referrals.
