Not sure if this is the right thread to post this on but here goes.

For a little context, right now I have 2 24' 1080p monitors (One is IPS @60hz the other TN @144hz) and I'm looking to potentially upgrade to 1440p or 4k gaming
I have a Ryzen 2700x + GTX 1060 6gb.

If I decide to upgrade to 4k I will probably just upgrade my GPU to a 3080 or 6800 XT since I dont think a cpu upgrade will be a meaningful upgrade.
If I upgrade to 1440p then I will have to upgrade both my CPU and GPU. Likely a 3080 or 6800XT as well.

I will also be getting monitor upgrades so a 27' 1440p 144hz ips and another monitor at the same resolution but 60hz or the same but with 4k.

My question is first, is there a big difference between 1080p and 1440p, and 1440p to 4k?
Second, Is it preferable to play on 1440p Ultra @ 144hz, 4k Ultra @60hz, or 4k medium @144hz?

For reference I play shooters but also a bunch of other games.

Would love to hear thoughts
Thanks

The easiest way to tell how much difference there is between 1080p and 1440p or 4K, is just use 1440p or 4K DSR on an older game that your current system can handle at those higher resolutions. It's a worthwhile enough difference for me on my 32" display, but on a 27" you wouldn't notice it as much.

Like the idea but I dont have a monitor capable of doing that.

Are you going to 27" screens or lager? If not then there is no need to go past 1080 for a "meaningful upgrade". Just use your 144hz screen for gaming.

1440 will be just fine for a 27" screen if you don't want to also spend money upgrading the video card. Many people are also fine at 1080 even on a 27" screen but for me that pixel pitch is just too large for the screen and it loses sharpness.

What is worth doing depends on the person, how large a screen you use is a big factor on what resolution is good for the cost.

Unless are you going to like a 32" monitor 1440 is fine, under 27" screen 1080 is also fine. You can always use supersampling to get nice sharp results in a 1080 screen. I run WOW this way on my system, just scale it at 1440 or 4k, best quality AA doing it that way. The post above about "DSR" does not require a special monitor to work, it's a driver feature that can be called several things https://www.howtogeek.com/316682/ho...-higher-than-your-monitor-with-supersampling/

Not sure you know what DSR is then, because any 1080p monitor can run 1440p or 4K in DSR. It's not the same as native 1440p or 4K, but the look and performance is near identical. It's more a matter of whether your GPU can handle it, which is why I suggested trying it on older games.

Just go into the Nvidia Control Panel, and under Global Settings on the Manage 3D Settings tab, go to DSR Factors and check all the boxes, then click Apply. You will then see a lot more resolution options show up in games.
