looking to replace an old 18inch 1080p monitor, i've got about $400-$500 to work with. this dell seems to be a pretty good deal, 1440p with gsync for around $400 after all.

problem is i'm not sure if my system can really support this. i've got a 2500k overclocked to 4Ghz (still should be headroom to overclock more), and a 980Ti. i figure that's enough but i wanted opinions, my eyesight is bad enough i'd likely not notice down-scaling to much unless there really is a severe difference.

alternatively if anyone has any ideas about different monitors i'm all ears. really the only criteria is the price point, though gsync would be nice.

Bullocks. My 5.5" phone screen has 1440p. Text can be scaled you know...

It's decent value, your system is pretty strong, however if you want these magic 144fps you will tinker with some settings.

Value for the panel is good, however depending on your current screen keep in mind this is not a top end screen and there's a reason that it's priced for $400 instead of $700.

For fast-action gaming it's great, for slow strategy or video/photo editing there are of course other screens I'd prefer.

well my current screen is a relatively cheap one i picked up years ago when i built my pc, so i can't imagine the one i'm looking at now is any more low end.

really i'm not sure how much i'd need something like gsync, its been the biggest sticking point for me i think; i don't really play shooters, and hell the fastest action game i can think of that i've played recently was shadows of war. i hate screen tearing, but from past experience vsync has always been enough to fix that for me and i've never really noticed the latency issues people bring up about it; though again i think its likely because i dont play shooters.

I have yet to play Shadow of War but Shadow of Mordor looks amazing on a 21:9 ultrawide, if your other games support 21:9 I'd highly recommend a 2560x1080P or 3440x1440P. I'm using the 2560x1080P/75hz/IPS and I love it as my 1080 ti/4770K keeps the FPS pegged at 75hz for smooth gameplay and vsync works fine. I also have a 1080P/144hz if I want that higher refresh but as is I prefer the ultrawide.

Something like this would be a big improvement over your current monitor and the larger size would help with text, but you can always adjust text and icon size with the OS if needed.

There's a 3440x1440P/IPS/75hz that's curved but it's a bit over your budget.

You forgot that your phone uses 4 pixels to display 1 pixel. That's the same as if everything was 200% zoomed in or your resolution was twice lower. And you don't read that text at same distance as computer display.

As for scaling, its utter bollocks. Scaling will result in blurred text.

Anyway, as others have mentioned, for 24" computer display that resolution might be too high. Its perfect for 27". I suggest spending a bit more to get 27" version of same monitor.

If you have up to $500 to spend, I'd recommend the Dell S2716DG over the S24. The extra 3" makes a huge difference and your 980ti should drive 1440p really well (my GTX 1070 is roughly the same and runs great). More demanding games (i.e. BF1) will only get 80-ish fps but the gsync will keep everything smooth. Other games, like Shadow of Mordor will crush it at 120fps.

27", 1440p, 144hz, 3/1 ms, gsync/ulmb.
