I was at Edwards AFB to witness the first Shuttle landing (Columbia) in 1981
or 1982 (I forget which).

I won't ever take a rocket ride on 29-31 January or February 2 any year!

Even if NASA had known about Columbia wing damage in orbit, there would have
been nothing they could have done save the the crew.

Will never understand why Shuttle design did not have an escape system that
would separate crew compartment from the rockets and tanks, similar to the
escape capsule used in the the F-111.

All US space ships up to the Shuttle had a means to separate capsule from
the booster stages during launch, but not re-entry.

You might want to ask that question about why the Shuttle doesn't have that
type of escape system in sci.space.shuttle.

GameBoy mentality!

No, we're not talking about multiplayer sims GameBoy. These were real
people that only had one chance to live and one chance to die. They
"played the game" and accepted the risk.

Haven't you ever heard the expression: "Nothing wagered, nothing gained" ?

Is this starting to make any sense to you now GameBoy "Troll" fredrickson?

I'm sure Gameboy is one of those players that can't hack any game without a
crack.

I probably left myself open on that last comment! 😀 What the heck.
Your turn.

Sniff, Sniff.....interesting bait....

Somehow I don't think you really want an answer, but how about:

For forging a path for the rest of humanity, and doing it while doing
something extremely dangerous???

I somehow doubt that this would survive the heat of reentry, especially
since you'd need explosives to separate the escape capsule...

I saw a launch once, one of the awe inspiring things I've ever seen.

There was an official report that said had they known there may have been a
*chance* to save the crew. There was another shuttle about 3 weeks from
launch while Columbia was in orbit. Whether they would have been able to
get the second shuttle up in time and either fix the damage or get the crew
off is open to question but there is some really brainy people at NASA.

Dont mark anniversaries in a downbeat way be happy that people are
eager to fill a place on the space shuttle or that the tyranny of any
facist dicatorship has been crushed underfoot like dirt.

All so that the trolls can make ther feeble, banal replies.

Well, I'm always up for a good laugh, fredrickson@smam.com, and if you
can pull some genuine and sincere humor out of the deaths of men and
women, regardless of how heroic, all the power to you. Okay, so
keeping in mind that we are talking about people who can't zing you
back, what's the magical punchline that makes you laught?

In What Ways Were They Heroes?

You are just fishing....
They did the unordinary. Sitting on dynamite might sound like fun.
However, it takes a lot of guts to actually do it. Additionally and more
importantly, each of these individuals lead by example (i.e. education,
leadership, and role models).
