I have to get a new graphics card, and im in a budget of about 150$. I was wondering is the ti 4800 card worth about 35$ more than the ti 4200. Are there any bumps/bruises about the 4200 or 4800 that I should know about before I go buy it ( saturday or sunday )

My old card that i am upgrading from is a G4 mx 440 64 mb, 4x agp. Please dont respond about getting a fx or ati or anything, its betweeen the 4200 and 4800. I have a new nforce 2 board by gigabyte in the mail as i speak, and a new AMD 2700 in the mail as well. The reason I say it is just between those 2 cards is I do alot of 3D and animation as a hobby and games on the side. I have heard alot of horror stories about ATI's and 3D sofware, but lets not get into a flame war about that, 4800 or 4200. Thx

Buy Ti4200 and save money, if you want to be limited between Ti4200 and Ti4800.

Otherwise, buy a R9600 Pro, it's a much better buy I've also heard a lot ATI horror stories before buying my R9000, but I'm yet to find a single app/game that doesn't work with R9000 or have compatibility issue. Recent ATI drivers are very good

Yeah, best bang for your buck at the $150 mark is the 9500 PRO/9600 PRO.

I can't believe that after you read his whole long speech about how it was only between 4200 and 4800, you STILL had to throw in your $0.2 about the ATI card. You're too funny.

I say go with the 4200.

Thanks guys, I too agree that the 4200 would be the best bet and I can save some money and spend it on some other pc thing hehe.

Can I just recommend you do one thing before you buy ANY card?

Go to your local store and test out a machine with the Ti4200 in it, the Ti4800 in it, and another machine with a Ati R9500 or R9600 in it.

Just do that before spending your money. See what you think.

Dhlucke, havent you figured it out yet. Some people just dont like logical thinking!

Always a good idea to actually try something out before buying it.

I'd agree with most of those above, the Ti4200 is probably your best choice. I've seen them run on a number of systems - and the performance difference between those and my previous rig (which included a Ti4400) was minimal. In terms of bang for your buck, I'd have to say the Ti4200 is the best idea. And odly enough, if I recall correctly, the benchmarking results I've seen here didn't show the 128 MB version to be much faster than the 64 MB version. You ought to look into that more, because the cards with less RAM most likely cost less. Hope this was helpful!
