Hi,

I received some gift cards to TigerDirect.com. I would like to build a PC with them. I saw your post and tried to follow it. My current PC is pretty good in my opinion but I have always wanted to build my own. Since I have a few gift cards I would like to give it a shot. Unless of course its not worth it given my current specs.

PS before long someone will come into this thread and suggest a powerful gaming gfx card . They are idiots since you dont even mention gaming at all so please dont listen to them . if you do you will have a noisy power hungry pc

I am not a gamer. I do not want a loud PC either. The current one I have makes almost no noise.

Well I have a about 250 in giftcards to tigerdirect so thats why I mentioned their place to get any big stuff from. I was looking at some of the barebone systems they had. I am willing to put more of my own money of course. Im really not sure what my budget is right now. I guess I am looking for opinions on what kind of good system I can get at a decent price. Also, I thought this would be alittle more fun piecing my own together somewhat rather than buying a complete PC from bestbuy or some other place. I am just not real knowledgeable when it comes to all the tech specs and chipsets etc.

For example. You see this barebone model here at a decent price which happens to be their top barebone seller right now, but then you go a few pages down and see another barebone model for 400 or 500, 600 plus.

That sounds good for that price. I see that the case you chose actually comes with the power supply and Im thinking that since my current system has new 2gb corsair memory I could probably sell that to recoup some of the cost and just put back in the old 4 x 256 memory when I sell it.

I am willing to do it all pieced together how you mentioned but one question though...I noticed that the mobo you chose says 2.20GHz and doesnt come with the memory etc (which isnt really a big deal)...Wouldnt the other one I mentioned previously be faster at 3.73 ghz? or am I interpreting that worng?

No. The Intel chip is old technology. You cannot compare clock speeds. A mid-level Intel C2 or a mid-level AMD Phenom II will be much faster because of a much more efficient architecture.

Thanks for the reply. Obviously this I did not know.

what chips should I go after mainly for my build? I should just pass on the Intel chips then right?

My current PC under system information says "Intel Pentium(R) 4 - 3.0Ghz"

So obviously in order to make this worthwhile I would want to do something better than my current setup.

Assuming I went with the suggestions above. What cooling fan would you guys recommend? Preferably one that doesnt sound like a jet engine...
