Hey TH! Been browsing and reading for a long time, but felt like i needed to finally join and ask a question myself. I may be driving myself nuts about temps, but ill run it by you guys first and go from there.
Build:
Fractal R4
i7 4790k
Asus Z-97a
Asus ROG 2070
Corsair Vengeance 16 Gig
Evga 750w
CPU is 212 Evo cooled with Noctua 120mm fan

Fractal R4 Case with fans set up like this ...
Top front - Open ( tried intake and exhaust there and both made cpu temps rise )
Top rear - Noctua 140mm exhaust
Rear Top - Noctua 140mm exhaust
Side panel - Intake 120mm cooler master fan
Bottom - Intake 120mm cooler master
Front panel - Intake, top 140mm Noctua and bottom OEM case fan

Complaint: CPU is seeing temps of 80c on BF5 on high settings, and 75c on CSGO on 1920 on low settings. No overclock at all. Out of the box settings.
I do use GeForce experience to record all gameplay, and mainly only run discord in the backround with it. I use HWMonitor to check the max temps. I have seen on here that people have been saying anything over 70c really is on the poor side of cooling. I am thinking of replacing my two front intake fans with a corsair h100 AIO . ( or if anyone has any other suggestions / ideas ) I know i would have to remove my lower hard drive tray , but that shouldn't be a big deal to find a place for my HDD and my two SSD's.
So am i losing my mind about the temps? Good idea to put in the AIO? Im not a big fan of running the AIO as the top exhaust honestly, front intake is where i would like it. Any other suggestions?
FYI: GPU temps have never gone higher then 40c even in overclock mode on GPU tweak. This was a CPU only temp complaint 😀

Thanks in advance!

How long has it been since you replaced the thermal paste on your CPU for that cooler? How long has the cooler been on the CPU in current state?

Is the CPU overclocked at all, or stock speeds? If so, speed and vcore?

Does the CPU cooler itself have a build-up of dust or anything in the cooling fins?

Have temps always been that high, or have they recently crept up higher?

The 212 Evo should be able to handle the 4790k which is an 88w part, unless you have some insane overclock applied.

You could also install a second fan for push/pull on the cooling tower, but I would reserve that until all the other items above have been investigated.

I upgraded from Asus ROG 1060 to the 2070 two weeks ago , and did a full pc clean and re application of the paste. I used to run the 1060 on the same settings for cs, but played bf5 on medium settings. IIRC they temps for CS used to be around 70c. 1060 GPU temps were around 60c . ( Such a big difference on the 2070 ) I also switched from the artic silver paste to the Artic MX-4 . Did the classic pea shaped application. I do have XMP enabled on the bios, but never have touched a thing overclock wise on the CPU. Im not sure if the CPU has to work harder due to how much better the 2070 now is, because thats when i noticed the uptick in temps. I guess it could be the thermal paste , but i dont know how likely that is. The fins , and all fans were cleaned well with three cans of compressed air. They werent brand new sparking, but very minimal specks if anything left.

I should also note , I have every single fan set to "turbo" mode in the bios so it ups the speed with the temps . I'm not concerned with noise or fans running all the time .

Was hoping for some more suggestions / comments on the h100 in the front . Would I make both top exhausts then? And leave the side and bottom as intakes for the gpu?

AIO is one option, sure. I would first recommend some cable management though and a new case before thinking of going for an AIO. It can be an improvement for sure, but if you're not getting proper ventilation you're just going to keep the same temperatures in the end or make them worse.

If you really want to see a good, an amazing temp drop. Honestly, delid and liquid metal. It's nerve wracking to do for sure the first time around, but you can see insane improvements you'd never get otherwise. I'd fair your max temp playing BF5 at 1080p would be around 50C. Fans barely even in use.

I would look into your airflow though seeing as your PC doesn't look like it has any dust problems. Fans could be better, moreso to which are exhaust and intake is the real question. Could really just be the fan on your heatsink being junk.

The Noctura fan on the 212 is part of the problem.
The original fan was rated for 83cfm most 120mm Noctura are 45- 50cfm.
Almost half of the air flow through the cooler is gone.

I did not know that. I assumed the noctua would be better then the factory fan . I still have it and can make the switch back easily .

I would like to keep the case I have right now and just improve upon it. I listed how my fans are above . I was assuming that if I did the aio, I could put both top fans as exhaust , leave the rear as exhaust . Leave the bottom and side intakes for the gpu. The front would turn into both fans for the CPU/aio. I guess cable management could be better , I tried my best to gather and zip tie them together . I'll have to look into it and see what I can do.
I have zero info about the delid , so that be the last option I take . I will watch that video and take a look!
