Time to overclock my core i7 2600k.

When i bought my computer, I got Canada Computers to put together all the parts, and i told them to overclock my intel core i7 2600k CPU to 3.8 ghz (it's stock at 3.4), since I bought a liquid cooler for it (The Antec H2O Kuhler 920)

My temperatures right now are pretty damn good, the core temperatures are at the low - mid 30s at close to 0% usage, and they are at around the low 50s at 100% usage. With my GTX 590, It performs great on most games, only dropping to low frame rates on some strategy games like CoH and Supcome, but i still feel like pushing my i7 a little further, maybe to 4.0 or 4.1, to put it at the same level as my GTX 590.

I wanted to ask if you guys would be able to give me instruction on how exactly to OC my processor, and to give me a recommendation for a speed to OC it to

Did you pay for them to clock it? Sounds like it's not clocked and just has turbo boost on. It will push to 3.8 stock outta the box. I've never clocked before so not sure how to check that....but also gonna try my hand at my first clock. I haven't found a satisfactory guide yet that is as helpful as I want it to be.

New to overclocking. From what I have read changing the multiplier only overclocks the cpu?
Changing the base clock makes for a better overall performance from each component?

I just built my first system and bought an i7-2600k and wanna try my hand at a little overclock
I don't wanna adjust any voltages to start. I just want to see how high I can clock without changing them.

From what I understand you need to find the max multi your system will boot with and also the max bclck
the system will boot with. And then just play with the adjustments? I read find your max multi and then
push the bclck as high as it will be stable. Is that the best for performance? Or find max bclck and then
adjust the multi til unstable and then pull it back 1x or 2x

Am I missing anything important?

saphire hd 6870 clocked at 950/1300
corsair h100 - max temps from intel burn test ~60c 5 cycles on max

on water i would try for 4.4ghz to 4.6ghz--not all 2600k will do that much but 4.2ghz should be a definite

you can barely move the bclk on 2600k boards--not the same as i7 where you can go over 200 bclck

you will be lucky to get 105bclk--just up the multiplier till its unstable then add a bit of cpu voltage

you could read the sticky on overclocking 2500k/2600k. not all our system specs are the same so it might be hard for telling you EXACTLY what to do. In overclocking you have to experiment, and you just have to take the risk of pushing your system over its limits.

anyway. I've pulled my 2600k up to 4.5 GHz on 1.27 Vcore. my temps are nice since my Vcore is low. tested it with prime95 for 24 hours straight having no problems with it.

there are 2600-k chips which are intel core i7
and there are chipsets for boards like z68, p/h 67

maybe you mean the first generation i7 chips
and not the sandy bridge

just the way i wrote it i guess -- i meant that on boards that can run the 2600k sandybridge you cant do huge bclk overclocking like you can on i7 920 etc x58 motherboards--you will be lucky to get to 105 bclk on the 2600k whereas on the i7 920 you could hit 220--so its more down to the multiplier than bclk overclocking

maybe i should just have said the chip rather than the motherboard--but the end effect is exactly the same whether its the chip or the board controlling the bclk

makes sense to me anyway

You should be able to get to 4.5 to 4.6 GHz with no problems with your setup. Go read the sticky on overclocking the 2600k (link below). It's well written and straightforward.

The short version:
Set your BCLK to 100.0
Set your vcore to 1.35
Set your multiplier to 45

Monitor your temps while running Prime95 - they should be in the 70-75C range.

You're done!

I've had something odd happen with my i7-2600k. I bought it about 4 months ago, and when I first bought it I tried to juice as much as I could out of it for benchmarking. I managed to get it up to 5.72GHz @ 1.57v watercooled with a corsair H100 and was very happy with it. I got a score of P43.000 in the PC Mark Vantage that came with my Maximus IV Extreme-z. But I don't know why now it won't go past 5.1GHz no matter how high I push the voltage. Any ideas? could it be normal degradation or what?
