This is what I have heard about these fans.
Rumor 1 - They mysteriously fail to function
I think this was proven to be true. Enough people had their fans fail to make this claim.
I've heard two explanations for the cause (consider these rumors as well).
1. Inrush current is high. I've heard 0.8 amp. If true this would be very bad for motherboard fan headers which are generally designed for 0.35 - 0.5 amp.
2. The top cover of the TMD fans is metal and can cause a short. Supposedly this happens if the fan mounting screws are over-tightened.
Rumor 2 - Supposedly the problems (never officially acknowledged) were addressed and corrected.
Those are things that I have heard. I don't know what's true and what' not.
My TMD fan was going strong for 6 months but I decided to switch to something quieter.
I wasn't worried about failure. I was careful about fastening the fan and I had it connected directly to the power supply.
It wasn't even all that loud (not after using noisy 60 mm fans). I'd call it medium loud but quieter is what I wanted.
The TMD fan did a nice job cooling while I was using it.
Well, that's all I know or believe about these fans.
