I've heard favorable things about TMPGEnc's suite of products. From viewing
what's available on the Pegasys web site, however, it's not clear to me what
products I need. The MPEG Editor seems self-explanatory, as does the DVD
Author products. But what is "TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress" and "TMPGEnc Plus 2.5"?
What's the difference between them? What do they do that the editor and
authoring products don't do?

they ENCODE the video files to vcd.dvd.svcd.etc.etc

the other ones edit and author.........a different thing entirely!

Thanks. But doesn't MPEG Editor come with an encoder, too? If so, which
encoder does it more closely resemble--3.0 XPress or Plus 2.5? And if MPEG
Editor comes with an encoder, is there still a need for either of those two
encoders? If so, which one?

I use the TMPGEnc suite of products and agree that they're marketing of the
suite isn't very well explained due to the overlap of their encoding
applications.
First you must understand that the basic steps of the Digital Video process.

Pre-Editing: AVI level editing to add titles, transitions, audio, sequencing
(TMPGEnc doesn't have a product for this, this is where you use Premeire,
Pinnacle Studio, Ulead Studio, Movie Maker to do your basic editing)
Encoding: Converts the AVI stream (low compression) to the MPEG 1 or 2 (DVD
is MPEG2) compressed video stream.
Post-Editing: cropping, filtering, editing of the compressed MPEG 1 or 2
stream (TMPGEnc does a very good job of working with compressed stream
video) when you need to edit existing compressed streams.
Authoring: Prepares the MPEG 1 or 2 streams for the DVD disc format by
adding menus, chapter points, animated icons, audio and creates the DVD file
structure.
Burning: Copies the DVD file structure to the actual DVD disc to be played
in a set top player.

Based on that, TMPGEnc only has products for all but the Pre-Editing
portion.

__Encoding__
Plus 2.5.x: is the core of their encoding products that allows for full
control of the encoding process, but does include a wizard for new users.
The application is daunting for new users, but is very quick for experience
users. Allows for creation of non-compliant streams based on user input.

Express: is the next generation user interface for Plus, with a few new
upgrades in the noise reduction and color filters and is designed for less
control and more usability, although all options are available from what I
can tell, just nested more in the user interface. Allows for creation of
non-compliant streams based on user input.

Source Creator: is a sub-set of the Plus product, but with the Express
interface. It can only create compliant MPEG 1 or 2 streams. Great for new
users, who don't want to be confused by the details and just want solid
encoded video for DVDs. After mastering this product...and want more
control, move on to Plus or Express.

__Post-Editing__
MPEG Editor: allows frame level editing of MPEG 1 or 2 video streams (not
all MPEG editor allow frame level editing)
__Authoring___
DVD Author: a basic template driven (with some customizations) authoring
package that allows frame level chapter points, motion menus, menu audio,
multi-page and color selections while creating a very robust DVD file
structure.
__Burning__
As part of the DVD Author application they include a DVD burning utility
that is very good but doesn't allow any options.
