It's always impressive to actually look back and reread previous reviews, isn't it? Sometimes you get so carried away that you actually don't really see things!

I mean, sometimes a difference of like 1% makes you scream! And come on, it's pretty irrelevant. So put things in perspective: Prescott is OK. It's not bigger than life, but hey, neither is an AFX at 2.4Ghz, it's still just a processor! So what if prescott is one or two percent slower than northwood now? So what if Athlon 3000+ is faster than similarly priced Intel CPUs? Does A64 3000+ makes everyone scream because of that? Well, then... the performance difference must be like... 100%? To make everyone scream?
No?
Well, then, at least 50%?
No?
But it does make every enthusiast cry out, doesn't it? So it must certainly be like 30% faster.
No? Really?
OK, 20%.
No??? 10 or less? So what's the big fuss about? Intel isn't light-years behind. Neither was AMD with Barton.

I'm just trying to make a point. It's just that, sometimes, you read a review and see that one technology is one or two percent slower or faster than the other and you immediately say... BOY, this CPU only scored 250fps in Quake III!!! That other one destroys it with its oh-my-god-much-faster 280fps!...

Well, I'm just making a point here, not defending or attacking anything. I hope you get it.

No I understand completely.

I'm not aiming this at you.. but the intel fanboys around here didnt think that way when the Athlon was only relatively slightly slower than the P4 and much, much cheaper.

But now, it could become their mantra once again... since its convienent.

I see it that way, and still do.

But I think I have full rights to sling doo those peoples way for all the debates they ganged up on me and the other TWO AMD defenders prior to prescotts release.
I'm not a bandwagoner, I prefer to support AMD with my money and words because they are in desperate need of support (I dont want AMD to go under creating a monopoly, and want to help as I can), have the only 64bit consumer CPU (cool for 64bit Linux), are cheaper, and perform as well or better than their intel competition. And I paid out my a$$ for YEARS for intel stuff back in the day for my 286, 486DX2/66, P133 and P2-400.
I dont know if you personally bought any of those but I have spent THOUSANDS on each one. Now, not ALL of that is the CPU.. ram used to be ungodly expensive but the prices dropped considerably when AMD started HAMMERing away. Pun intended.
Plus AMD has the Nforce... KICKASS!

Pre-A64, many of those reasons were still true, just not as many and not in such wide degree.
So I agree with you, what you just said is my argument for AMD quite a bit. Its a fine argument, but the truth does remain.. AMD owns. To some extent or another.
And the "intel crew" around here stones people for not agreeing worse than my crew of 2-3 supporters do to them.. "intel crew" trys to talk down to you and make you feel inferior and some kind of fanatic. I COULDNT STAND debating this stuff with Eden.. though I miss the lad, I hope he returns to the Collective soon. :frown:

Thats why I like BB, he knows hella lot more than I do and hes not pro-intel. In fact, I think hes unbiased.
He seems to only speak the truth.
I could be wrong.
edit- Look at BBs response to my hate filled post... it was balanced and fair.. thats the smart mentality that AMD supporters have (AND I HATE THAT, LETS GETTEM BOYS!)

If what I do is considered trolling (even though its backed up by facts), I dont care... Im a vengeful person. Its time for revenge and gloating!

If your point is: "there is more to life than 3% better/worse CPU performance or 20 points higher 3Dmark scores", you are preaching to the quier (however you spell that). i.o.w., you have come to the wrong forum :)

I PM'd scamtron (hes always had a custom title) about it, he will prob be able to lead me to whoever we need to talk to if the title is a possibility. Esp for two regulars like us.
I think its fitting and characteristic of me. I cant speak for you, but if you want the title maybe we can get it!

If they refuse, we can always chase them around the forums and ARGUE with them until they do!

Phoenetically, or spelled as it is said aloud.. it would be spelled kwI-err.
The capital I would designate it is pronouced as an individual "I" is, while the "-" of course is describing a syllable break.

I can't say I don't know that feeling :) you know, I don't mind people likeing intel (or AMD) for whatever defendeable reason, but I hate and thoroughly dispise anyone that doesnt know squat and just roots for the "big guy" and rehashes Intel PR, because they think the odds are better that intel will be proven "right" than AMD, since after all, intel is 20x the size of AMD and has like 85% market share. Surely the odds seem better to defend the big guy, and be proven right, not ? Well, at least if you have an IQ bigger not much bigger than your shoesize.

Thing is, I sincerly think most intel supporters are like that (rooting for the big guy, I'll refrain from guessing their IQ :), especially the fanatics. Either that, or they want to see their $800 cpu purchase validated by others as not to feel entirely stupid about it, or they are 14 yrs old, and their dad works @ intel. Can't think of other reasons really. Or maybe one other: they own more intel stock than common sense.

>Thats why I like BB, he knows hella lot more than I do and
>hes not pro-intel. In fact, I think hes unbiased

Not being pro-intel makes me unbiased, right ? 😀 Everyone is biased, so am I. My bias is towards price/performance, and against preconceived irrationality (hey, that sounds good, doesnt it ? :). If the entire forum is blindly pro AMD, I will argue against them, but also vice versa (which is more likely). Confrontation of idea's is always good. For instance, since -almost- this entire forum fails to grasp the 64 bit issue, I see it as my holy task to educate them.. its a mission impossible, but I guess that is me :)

Yes, these are the ones who now will join us in defending AMDs method of advancement over Intels.
That is due to a lack of knowledge or a good logical thought process as this was obvious on the A64 launch.
I was very impressed while others here tried to downplay the launch.
It was excellent for a new processor.
The Prescott, though I have given it hell.. is par for the course. It does the job a new core should do.
I just rag on it because it doesnt live up to the "pre-game" hype.
Hey, you open your mouths and some of us are going to remember and bring it back to ya after we're proven right!!!

Thats called the part that SUCKS when spouting off a bunch of crap!

But IMO, even when intel appeared superior (prior to the A64 launch) it was not. Only slightly.
I used the logic Mephisto did, but threw in that it was cheaper, and performed better at the lower speed grades than its comparative Intel chip due to its IPC.
They polished the turd that is the willamette enough to get it competitive and presentable.
So since the Athlon was first introduced I have felt that even to this day AMD has been the superior choice overall.
The Athlon was the day when I purged myself of all that is intel.

Intel bandwagoners nit pick on what makes their chip look good for the moment. AMD has the whole package- price, performance, no RDRAM  ever, heck the Nforce1/2 even had the stellar SOUNDSTORM, no intel that has been released since the beginning of time has had, nor can have anything with realtime dolby digital encoding.. period!
Toss in 64bit and you have an undisputable leader.
From a company that would rather LEAD than become lacking and stagnant like intel.

Hence my view that AMD is the superior semiconductor engineer.

You should know by now that the correct response to an ultra fast 32/64 bit CPU is to diss it and put magical faith into a new technology that is slower(at least initially) and illicits a big yawn when you read about it. To think otherwise, is to be an AMD fanboy.

If you can't have faith in Prescott, just fight reality with grandoise claims about how Intel has the ultimate technolgy they're just sitting on because they are so wicked awesome. If you don't do this, you're an AMD fanboy.

You must understand that software makers write software for processors, and then those processors come to market. AMD has it backwards. If you don't believe that, you're an AMD fanboy.

So in the future, anything that doesn't exalt Intel is said because you're an AMD fanboy. The only valid benchmarks are the ones that show Intel ahead, to disagree, is to be an AMD fanboy. The suggestion of 64bit computing on a desktop PC, other than in relation to running under an Intel offering, means you're an AMD fanboy(or one of those dirty mac people). Bringing up features like protected execution on the desktop, unless it's related to the Itanium, means you're an AMD fanboy.

Do you understand now?

Yeah, doesn't make a stick of sense to me either.

Ah, I forgot about you. Welcome to the Horde.

LOL! Ive always been a staunch enemy of SSE instruction sets or any thing of the sort. The die space should be used to add some more cache.. something, anything but another useless instruction set that keeps reminding me of all the performance MMX gave us. Yawning material at best.
Why cant intel just make FAST CHIPS, period??? ARGH.
If your going to start adding in crap to make up for the fact that heat is starting to catchup to our processors... 64bit is a better method to go than ANOTHER MMX/SSE variant that not only, (a) increases the processor divide but, (b) simply doesnt appear useful in a broad range of applications.
Unlike 64bit WILL be, that is certain in consumer computing.

Heck, even THG had trouble finding SSE3 apps to test and the one they did run had a 0% gain.
Read: 0% gain, or near such.

But that was an excellent post that you have there.
It pretty much says it all in the best most concise way I've seen it written.
Nice job.

Kinny I was unware of the extra stages hence I was wrong in my theories on prescott performance. I still will go on record though the core was well designed with considerations there are 10+ more stages added and performance is nearly a wash when compared to the northwood.

-taitertot

If this post has attitude, seems to be overly aggressive, rude, distasteful to 99% of the users here, and shows a zealous defense of Intel... It’s probably Spud.

Thats how I see the overall scene.. intel has no place besides in Dells and with people who dont know better.
You just specified the biggest computer market, and guess who rules the roost there, hmm? AMD meanwhile relies upon your money and the money of other enthusiasts whom frequently purchase cheaper CPUs with lower margins and then overclock those to get the most "bang for their buck". Gee, I wonder why Intel is easily making money while AMD struggles just to be free of the red. Could it possibly be because Intel targets a spend-happy majority while AMD targets a penny-pinching niche? No. Never. It must just be all about performance. Yeah. 😱

There is a reason why engineers do the R&D and not the marketing or sales.

If this beast had only 20 stages, it would probably outperform northwood by a very healthy 15-20%...

As is is, however, it hasn't shown its true colors yet. :frown:

If Prescott has 20 stages it would not even make it to 3 gigs. There is a very good reason Intel hobbled the chip with more stages than an intersellar rocket. Because it needs it to reach stupid mhz. speeds.

Thats kind of a duh statement. Its all about getting the OEMs.
That doesnt mean I'm going to stop supporting AMD.

OEMs are what makes Nvidia the majority of their money, same for Intel or AMD.
AMD just needs more. The emachines buyout is unfortunate. I'm anti-dell because they suck, and they are a staunch pro-intel company.

No one ever even so much as suggested that you contemplate stopping your support of AMD. However I offer you this to consider: Intel is making money. AMD, well, is AMD. Which do you think is doing a better job of meeting the needs of the most customers?

It is not about the technology. It is about aiming your products and your marketing at the largest targets. So you can complain about Intel and praise AMD all that you like, but in the end your complaints will not even amount to a hill of beans.
