To onboard or not to onboard?

That is my question. I am about to buy a new MB and I'm wondering whether I should be worried about whether or not it has onboard sound. My original plan was to upgrade my AWE64 to a SB Live for surround sound. I'm wondering if the onboard sound cards are surround sound and if anyone knows what kind of quality I can expect. Can I disable it on most boards so I can upgrade in the future? I'm thinking of going with the Asus A7V133. Anybody got any useful comparison information between onboard and say the SB Live? Sorry if this question has been asked a thousand times but I'm a newbie here =).

Only go with onboard sound if you can't get enough money together to get a real sound card. If you have an extra $100 get a sound card and forget onboard sound.

True..onboard is pretty crap..sound tends to be how do you say....crap.get a SBlive

Screw you guys->->->I'm goin home

Don't use on-board sound if you can. If the computer is for business use, or non-gaming the on-board sound will be OK, but you can get the Creative SB Live Value for $47.90 at www.mwave.com. This is all you need, it is an OEM version which contains the Card, sound cable, and CD for the drivers. If you get a motherboard with sound on it, I have not seen any yet that cannot be disabled. As for the AWE64, it is now about the same quality card as those on the motherboard. The SB Live is probably the most compatible card out for all systems, and is supported by almost all OS's now out of the box.
