I personally am MUCH more impressed with the small laptops (NOT netbooks) using the low voltage core 2 parts like the SU4100 and SU7300. I have an Asus UL80Vt from work (I know it is 14" but all the same hardware fits in a 13" and even smaller - minus the DVD drive of course) and it is powerful and also gets OVER 10 hours of battery life when in use (real world tested)

My dad has a Dell Mini 11z and that thing is a monster as well (and an 11")

The thing holding Intel back is its closed chipset. Definetly needs nVidia and ATI on board to produce good all around Intel notebooks. Below $1000 that isn't happening which is why AMD should be winning the market share here. To me it really does not matter if you buy an Intel notebook with an Atom or a Corei7 if they have an Intel IGP. They are still limited to the same software due to the inabilities of Intel's Chipset division.

A fantastic review. Very informative and well written. Someone might have mentioned it, and I missed it in the comments, but my only complaint is that some of the graphs aren't labeled on the x-axis. I am pretty sure I could gather what they represent, but my engineering side screams when I see that.
I really enjoyed how you guys came up with your own benchmark, very neat and thorough. I hope you come up with more of them, doing different things and eventually maybe on different systems (some desktop power usage while listening to music, gaming, and downloading something? Who knows, you guys are creative enough).
Still going to wait for more power until I get one though...

A pitty noone tested the N550 processor.
It outperforms the N450 by 80% in some cases, and perhaps even outperforms the AMD Neo processor on ALL fields (including performance, power requirements, price, and perhaps paired with an Nvidia card (ION platform) even have better 3D results than the neo.

I bought an ASUS 1000H netbook with 2GB last year, am using it right now sitting in my recliner, and have hardly touched my desktop PC since.

I carried the netbook on my recent overseas trip, used it happily on buses with free wireless internet while people with bigger fancy Apples struggled with the seat backs.

Watch YouTube videos all the time - only downsides - maybe not for superfast games, screen size not quite standard, and sound not wonderful - but otherwise, for me, wonderful!

ASUS - the netbook orginator, reliable, compact, portable - I recommend it !

^Amd in this sector is like core i7 for desktop much more powerful than the other. I think that's what numbers showed in this test & just my opinion.

We have more to expect from Intel's next gen Atom, which hopefully will have shared L-Cache memory with the graphics processor, and possibly an extra ring for data transfer between CPU and GPU (no longer all data over FSB).

Hopefully Intel will also include turbo boost on these processors, and allow each core to have a different clock speed (as is needed).

Broadcom's benefits, and even those of AMD will look pale to this!
expected Mid 2011 (or 2012).

I just bought a 1001P less than a week ago.

For clarification, the 1001PX has a 3 cell 23wH battery. The 1001P has a 6 cell 48wH battery.

I'm not sure if you can interchange them. Also I believe the 1001P has 2 miniPCI-e slots, swapping out the Atheros G Card for a N shouldn't be too difficult, nor adding a Broadcom Crystal HD.

The 1001PX doesn't automatically come with a 23wh battery. Some of the SKUs do.

That is a 1001PX that comes with the 48WH battery. It depends on the SKU.

you are right, it really is a 48wH. it seems that the "Windows XP model will have a 160GB hard drive and 3 cell battery, while the Windows 7 version will have a 6 cell battery and 250GB hard drive."

this is interesting because my 1001p (white) came with a 250gb hdd and bluetooth, but only b/g wireless.

man companies can really confuse people with subtle changes and seemingly-random model labels. hard to believe that a year ago i thought graphics cards were bad...

anyways thanks alot for the article, i really liked the Broadcom Crystal HD section. looking forward to more!

Definitely the most complete CrystalHD review to date - very much appreciated! Although there are limitations, I think that as long as you understand those limitations your expectations will be met and this is still a great product.

Is there any chance you could re-test some of the same content using Media Player Classic - Home Cinema instead of WMP? I've seen some posts suggesting that MPC works a bit better with the CrystalHD cards than WMP and would really like to see some definitive testing to support/refute those anecdotal claims.
