While the "1984" method of ruling through fear and paranoia can work short-term, I prefer, and see greater benefits through the "Brave New World" approach of keeping your subjects fat, sassy, and entertained, treating others as softly as possible; only removing the velvet glove to reveal the iron fist beneath when necessary.

How will you rule your galactic empire? Will you subjugate and destroy or rule like a benevolent god?

Taking a page from a classic, I would first dissolve the Imperial Council thereby wiping away any remnants of the Old Republic. Then I would grant the regional governors direct control over their territories. Fear would keep the local systems in line. Fear of my battle station.

To be less silly in my response...
I would probably take a diplomacy first approach but wield a big stick for the inevitable failings of reasoning with interstellar species. i would preference focusing on enlightenment and then basically assimilating other species's through cultural propagation. however when push comes to shove, war is an effective way... in most strategy games i tend to turtle anyways.

I will probably act a fool the first few games, and will require a few ding dongs and dumb dumbs to get through the first game.

If I were an emperor, my first decree would be to ban smoking everywhere. It's the only thing I'm currently able to come up with. Sorry.

I like to pour everything into science to out-tech the enemy. It doesn't always work, but if I lose, I'll lose with t3 lasers.

I'll probably rule peacefully, with a hell of a bulwark against aggressors. The best defense is a good offense.

I'd slowly gain power by building uneasy alliances. Once powerful I'd quickly crush my foes and have ultimate power... or just be destroyed and try a different strategy to rule the universe!
