In celebration of the release of "300", we stripped down to our capes and underwear to put together a list of our top 10 favorite fight scenes from the movies.

While I respect your picks, ; what about The Matrix Trilogy? - getting Honorable Mention, how can you forget the sparring or agent smith(s).... how about Hero? Or Mel Gibson taking on 20 redcoas in the Patriot? I'm not a fan of Tom Cruize, but the ending fight scene in MI:2 (including the bike chase) was pretty badass.

lord knows I agree with some of the big ones though.... although its a tough call for #1, I do believe you got that right. I'm confident that fight itself took weeks to plan and days to perform right. I've always like the Cage vs Scorpion scene as well so kudos on that call too.

The Matrix (first one) redefined movie fights totally. Mr. Smith and Mr. Anderson... will be remember for years to come by me as a revolution in movie combat scenes.

On another note, Robert Patrick against Arnie is also worth more than a mention. While certainly not technically difficult, they had some hillarious bouts when T2 blew away everybody on the big screen.

Mortal Kombat? Come on.. thats a joke! Sorry!

Best movie fight:

Ralphie vs. Scott Farkus

 Best. Post. Ever.

I agree with you guys about the Matrix, but I actually thought the Morpheus and Neo sparring scene was the better one.

And as for Mortal Kombat (bleh!), I raised objections over that one to Travis but he ignored me. So sad...

I have to second Agent Smith vs Neo in the first Matrix Movie. While there are a LOT of fights in the Matrix Trilogy, their subway fight defined the Matrix. Shorten that fight, or take it out and the movie falls flat.

Grosse Pointe Blank had 3 great fight scenes, but the one in the school, ending with the pencil was great stuff.

Good to see you remembered it.

Gladiator had a few jaw droppers too, and live up to rewatching, with the same intensity.

The new Bond film Casino Royale puts the punch back in Bond, good stuff there as well.

After you opened with the 300 comment, I assumed that this was going to be a list of the best battle scenes (i.e. Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, etc). I would love to see a list of those.

Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris in Return of the Dragon

That is the best fight scene ever.

i second the thoughts on hero, the fight scenes in that movie are totally awesome.
also house of flying daggers deserves to be mentioned, it certainly stands next to crouching tiger hidden dragon
and indeed the matrix should be on that list!!

I don't know where to start or end. That is the worst list I have ever read in my life. I know it is an opinion, but in my opinion your list stinks.

I have to disagree with all of you guys about the Matrix fights. They were pretty cool at the time and they deserve kudos for their originality but they just don't compare to many movies that have copied their style. I can't accept that the Matrix fights are better just because they were good at the time.

Best movie fight:

Ralphie vs. Scott Farkus

totally agree...

double-live gonzo, intensity in ten cities, live at budapest!

to others:

Honestly, I agree with the call to have none of the Matrix fights make the list. If you actually look at them close (ESPECIALLY the smith-neo fight in the subway) you can really see the pulled punches and mechanical movements. How about when neo gets his "second wind" and walks up to smith, sets his feet (booo!) and then cocks his arms (telegraphing the punch so clear that my grandma could avoid it) only to throw his whole weight into it, shoulder and all... just wow. A 6 year old could pull him to the ground easily when he does that! NOT a good fight IMO when compared to the others on the list. (good sci-fi movie, not so good fight-movie if you analyze the fights)

Looking at the kill bill fights and others you can tell that actors CAN pull fighting off... but in Matrix (regardless of how good the overall movie is) the actors all around just don't sell the fight. Maybe better editing like the bourne movies would have hid that stuff and saved the figts... maybe not, but it is plain as day as it stands.

I registered and logged just to post this.

That list is invalid because of all the Kung Fu films. None of these are mentioned.

Fist Of Legend
Legend Of A fighter
So Close (Most scenes were cheesy final fight was damn good)
New Legend of Shaolin/Legend of the Red Dragon
Any Fight scene with Yasuaki Kurata and countless others.

he mentioned kung-fu movies... and drunken master is a fine representation and one of the best of the genre.

I am a huge fan of Hong-Kong movies, wu shu movies in particular and I have no problem with his explanation. If you read the opening qualification you can understand why he did it... and b/c he explained it clearly I have no issues with the dearth of kung-fu.

What about the fight scenes in EQUILIBRIUM??

it got an honorable mention... which in itself is ok until you realize it got beat by the Gandalf fight. Actually, any of the honorable mentions should have beaten that one down. (pun intended) They are all much better true fights than the CG-fall through the cavern.

honestly, even based on the description it is a truly great "scene", but not much of a "fight"

Sure, it's short and kind of hard to make out, but that super wide shot of the entire cavern where you see this tiny ball of fire slowly falling is incredible

that describes a good scene, but not a fight IMO... but I am not going to quibble. It was a noble effort to quantify fights into a list. One could reorder it based on alot of things, but that one is the only glaring mistake IMO. Well done overall.

How about the Yoda fight scene? I thought that one was better than the Darth Maul scene.

No Jet Li?

How about the gun fights in Hard Boiled?

And nothing beats the Looney Tunes / Kung-fu styling of Kung Fu Hustle. Those fights have to be some of the most original ever....

How about the gun fights in Hard Boiled?

Hard Boiled is awesome, but those are shootouts. Maybe we need another list -- top 10 gunfights? Not sure if I could pick just 10 but Hard Boiled would be on it. The hospital shootout is crazy good.

This is exactly why none of the Matrix fights made the list. I watched them all several times, and they just don't sell those hits. They have a lot of style, but there is one part in the training fight in the first movie where Morpheus sidekicks Neo and it might be the worst stunt I've ever seen.

Hero and House of Flying Daggers both had me screaming, "Stop flying and smack someone!"

Keep it coming.

How about the dockyard fight in The Transporter? Oil? Fire? Makeshift weapons? Crowds of bad guys vs. one misunderstood "hero" who totally keeps his cool despite the odds?

It's easy to be a bada$$ when you have a Samurai sword or a lightsaber and only a single opponent or two, but how about when it's only you and your wits and ingenuity against a whole bunch of people trying to kill you?
