[citation][nom]universalremonster[/nom]Nobody before your post said anything about torrents equaling piracy, this was a security issue.[/citation]
How about the article it self. Take careful look.
Sub-title:
Researchers at security firm Damballa said that an infected, pirated version of Windows 7 Release Candidate created a botnot spanning around 27,000 controlled bots.
then the first santence:
Researchers at security firm Damballa said that an infected, torrented version of Windows 7 Release Candidate created a botnet spanning around 27,000 controlled bots.
Kevin is repeating the sentence to make a point, but for some reason replaces "pirated" with "torrented" effectively applying that both are the same. The result is the comments #2, and many posts after that.
If the security is important the correct sentence should be something like this:
"Researchers at security firm Damballa said that an infected, pirated version of Windows 7 Release Candidate created a botnot spanning around 27,000 controlled bots. The infected version is spreading through bitTorrent download."

[citation][nom]ossie[/nom]m$ will never use BT because they can't get their dirty DRM, and dumbed & incompatible protocols in it, so they'll stick with "in-house" $hit.vi$hta $p2+ (aka $even) just proved again the ultimate achievements in m$ "security"... it's like a shiny apple with a rotten core, where all worms are happily dwelling.[/citation]
What the hell are you talking about? Just because the distribution method of software may be through torrenting, it doesn't change the software that was originally uploaded (including/excluding DRM)--perhaps you're just too used to downloading torrents of illegally cracked games, and think that's what torrents are for? Creating a torrent for a piece of software doesn't magically remove DRM or any such feature of the software--that is due to the work of the people cracking the program, genius...not due to the nature of torrents.

M$ probably doesn't want to use torrents for it's beta releases or RC's because it wants to do prelim software testing in an organized manner that it can keep track of for the purpose of effective debugging, hence having downloads directly from M$. It makes sense despite the effectiveness of using a torrent to disseminate software.

Conspiracy theorists--anyone care to discuss whether they think M$ may have released dirty torrents of their pre-release OS to encourage people to buy a legit copy when it's released? I know, it sounds like I'm reaching here...lol.

This is not intended to be a dumb question:

If there is an infected release out there, why not connect the installed drive to a properly shielded Vista or XP install and scan the Win7 drive in offline mode.
This assumes there are signatures for the infection, but that will basically only omit the registry hive and some possible ACL access problems from the scan.
That is where I would start. Then again, I don't/won't run BETA/RC OS's.

[citation][nom]EnFoRceR22[/nom]Yes because software is inherently secure.... there is a clue out there. Go get one.[/citation]

Well said.

i got my iso from torrents because when i used the crappy java download program they where using kept telling me can not access the internet even though java had internet access through my firewall

The Microsoft RC causesc a BSOD on install on some systems for which there is no fix. Build 7127 fixes it but is only available on torrents

The reason is that the MS download is corrupt. Check Google for Win 7 RC corrupted and you will find that the MS sight cannot provide a clean copy no matter how many times one tries to download the 2.35 GB file. Typical MS software gliches. If one can't download, wonder what the actual WIN 7 program does - more gliches?
