It seems, for most, bittorrent ultimately means free content. But for some, like myself, it means much more robust download experience:
- automatic checksum check/re-download.
- download pause/continue.
- no need for sign-up.
- download pause/continue.
- automatic checksum check/re-download.

Yes, the first two are important enough to be repeated.

Now, if only MS provides torrent downloads, but we all know they are in close ties with the content industries (itself included), no hope there.

i tried 4!! times to download windows 7 using up 12gb/my monthly 30gb WTF!, Microshits website download manager Bullshit screws up everything, so thats y i downloaded from Demonoid on the 5th try, and guess what IT WORKED

Another reason for people using torrent instead of MS website is the fact that MS blocks access for users from a number of third world countries. I live in Iran and everytime i wanted to download directly from MS i got an "access denied" error. The only way for me to get the Win7 RC was to use bittorrent.

Sounds to me like the people railing on Microsoft and praising BitTorrent are those who prefer to steal programs.

Only two things I've ever seen on Torrent sites aside from the innocuous that I could download directly from a web site:

1. Pr0n
2. P1r4t3d w4r3z

Why oh why would someone dl from a Torrent if it's already available from a legit source? Answer: they're using Torrent for an illegitimate resource.

Use torrent for what it was meant for - downloading legit software. Don't pollute the torrent with flipping pirated warez! If you download warez you deserve every virus and spyware infection you get.

If you don't like ActiveX controls chances are you're trying to avoid downloading the WGA control in IE to force an activation. WTF! If you're a pirate ADMIT IT and OWN IT. Don't try to make up an excuse for your lame cheapness!

P0wnd.

[citation][nom]IzzyCraft[/nom]Just need a live/hotmail account really... And it is used for downloading any public beta from microsoft.[/citation]

let me just be a little bit more precise: you don't actually need an e-mail account with Microsoft. I don't know if they're making it mandatory now, but for those who already have an ID, it surely wasn't the case a few ears ago. I have never had an e-mail account with Microsoft. In fact I sign in onto Live Messenger with an e-mail account from my ISP since the beginning, that's the e-mail I gave Microsoft to register. No problems then. I don't know how it works now, but I remember it was pretty straightforward.

[citation][nom]kami3k[/nom]Well considering how it was torrented 100,000s of times and so few bots are appearing, yea I can put two and two together and say I'm safe. And how are we idiots be downloading through a better medium then pretty much any other?[/citation]

i agree theat MS download manager sucks compared to downloading it via bit torrent

Your all right, if you download from public torrents/trackers, your taking your pc'sife in your hands and are idiots as far as Im concerned!!!!!!!

Grow a brain!!!! Use a private tracker!!!!!! :)

PS Sarcasm intended

I'd personally be very interested to learn how many of the downloads occurred as torrents AFTER the RC was officially released. The RIAA and MPAA should really look at those kinds of numbers, because I'd be willing to bet a lot of people ran a torrent rather than pull an official download--despite the fact that it was free.

If you have installed an RC build that you downloaded from a source other than the official Microsoft site, then you should confirm that the MD5 checksum on the ISO is the same as a known safe MD5. Known safe MD5s are:

Windows 7 RC Build 7100 x86: 8867C13330F56A93944BCD46DCD73590
Windows 7 RC Build 7100 x64: 98341af35655137966e382c4feaa282d

If your MD5 checksum doesn't match, reformat your hard drive and install a known good download.

That was nice of you to write that prescott.

I waited for the RC7 to be open directly from Microsoft. Like people said there should be no hurry (as in, could you literally not wait 10 days?). People getting dirty copies of W7 makes me laugh, and not in a good way. A couple of my close friends are into downloading torrents... a little too much. I gave my friends copies of Diablo 2 (purchased) so we could play online. I told one of them that he had to download the patch before we could play, so what does he do? He goes on a friggin torrent site, downloads and installs a 'patch', and when he connects to battlenet gets permanently banned. Suspecting my friend's habits I asked where he got the patch. "...torrents" "WTF?!!! It was on blizzard's site, 11 MB file for free and you torrented it?!" D:<

The download from MS was excellent, and completely saturated my download speed (~600KB/s). I can understand if you're in a foreign country and MS blocked the area where you live, but other than that if you got infected, lack of judgment/self torrenting policies on your part IMHO.

Look, I love Torrents and Piratebay just as much as any other random nerd, but why is everyone defending the idea to download the RC via Torrents?

What was the time disparity between when it was released MSDN, and when it was publicly available? Wasn't it like a week or less?

I'm sure the average internet user could have filled his time making obnoxious comments like this one on Tech sites, or masturbated to Hentai, to fill that incredibly large time-void.

If you downloaded RC via Torrents and contributed to the Botnet, you're a moron, plain and simple.

[citation][nom]SAL-e[/nom]I can't believe how brainwashed some people are. BitTorrent is not equal to piracy. Many people use BitTorrent because is the most efficient method to download.[/citation]

Nobody before your post said anything about torrents equaling piracy, this was a security issue.

m$ will never use BT because they can't get their dirty DRM, and dumbed & incompatible protocols in it, so they'll stick with "in-house" $hit.
vi$hta $p2+ (aka $even) just proved again the ultimate achievements in m$ "security"... it's like a shiny apple with a rotten core, where all worms are happily dwelling.

Yay I am annoying everyone with spam email from my machine!
Wait, no, I downloaded an untouched copy and had it scanned from my XP with several scans every week. But I suppose it would be fun to make everyone mad.

Too bad that bittorrent will just get another media black eye for the greed of those who exploit it for nefarious reasons. It really is a good way of downloading and sharing, but the lack of serious regulation, and the continued exploiting of the anonymity it provides (to some extent, but not all, ie: IP's). Thousands of distros of linux/ubuntu/freeware/etc seems to always escape the eyes of the media who are only looking for a dirty story anyways (not meaning Toms, as much as places like Fox news and such). Lets not forget the amount of people who will blame any botnet or virus issues they get from the unauthorized download sources will end up starting another media storm about windows vulnerabilities, even though its still incomplete. Watch in dismay as people with no tech background start bashing away at things they don't understand, yet again. If you have never worked on a car, don't give your mechanic advise....

P.S. Thanks for the articles Tom's crew. I hope you guys take another look at the improved SSAO shader option thats been added to the new WHQL drivers for NVidia. Maybe if it becomes big enough selling point, ATI will make there own screen space AO shader or better.

As much as I like torrent, I don't think I would be able to download the RC through it at constant 700 KB/s right from the start as I did from MS direct D/L.

I don't have a MS live account, I don't have any account with MS, and I downloaded the first beta with no problem. Now they want me to sign up for some kind of account to download the "free" RC. What part of "free" do they not understand. I read every single word on that screen and nowhere did it tell you how to get an account. Do they want people to download it or not? If they make it too difficult or if you have to be special and know the secret handshake, then the unwashed masses will go for the easy way out.

Yes because software is inherantly secure.... there is a clue out there. Go get one.
