Well I went ahead and got the Toshiba IK-WB11A Network Camera. The thing
works great! Right out of the box! Unlike other products which had me
messing with the router, ports, IP addresses, etc., this thing came alive
as soon as I plugged it in. And once I figured out which of its 2 MAC
addresses (it gives 2, one for Lan, one for WLan) to use, I was able to use
it wireless. No problems there either. Some of the web pages built inside
of it are rough around the edges. I was especially interested in having
the camera detect motion and throw images up to my ftp sight. And while it
does that, the admin pages to set that all up are somewhat confusing. And
the page on how the images are to be recorded and sent to an ftp site seems
undocumented, even after downloading and reading the advanced user guide.
Pre-recording frames? Post-recording frames? # of frames per second?
Can't find an explanation anywhere. Overall though, a good product, GREAT
image, not terribly difficult to set up, works right away. Don't see the
reason for having an SD card slot, since if the camera is ripped off, there
goes all the snapshots. That's why I like its ability to send to an ftp
server. Even sends email notifcation when alarms go off. I like it!

I'm near a purchase decision on this camera. Do you have any further
feedback or impressions after using it for a while?

TIA

This cam is very cool, but one potentially major problem... the wifi
(wireless) built into the camera is real weak and will not deal well
with obstacles, so if you don't have a clean line-of-sight and you are
looking to use the wifi then i would skip it. Most newer cams have
pcmcia card slots for wifi and you could stick in a stronger wifi
card.

Damn, the wireless capability is one of the major reasons for buying this
puppy (along with the low light and picture quality).

I've read some really nasty reviews on this camera (
http://www.epinions.com/pr-Toshiba_IK-WB11A_Webcam/display_~reviews ) and
the lack of decent tech support. They have released a new firmware update
recently (3.12 on 11/2/04) which simply says "Improved reliability of camera
operation". Have you updated to this yet?

The previous releases fixed problems that one would have expected to be
fixed before the product was released to the public. Shelling out $600 for
a camera that won't do what it claims to do would really piss me off.

I'm definitely starting to think I should look else where. Somebody else
pointed out a D-Link DCS-3220 that looks promising. Anybody tried one yet?
Being a new product would lead me to believe I'd be a field test site for
them!
