Question Touchpad slow / laggy on Acer Aspire 7 (A715-51G-74CX) – Need help finding permanent fix

Hi everyone, I have an Acer Aspire 7 (A715-51G-74CX) and I’ve been dealing with an issue where the touchpad becomes laggy or unresponsive at random times. The clicks still work, but the cursor feels delayed or “heavy” — like it’s not tracking my touch in real-time.
I found that toggling the touchpad using the F10 key temporarily fixes the issue (it works normally after that), but then the problem comes back eventually.

Here's what I’ve tried so far:
  • The touchpad driver is listed as ELAN I2C Filter Driver in Device Manager.
  • I downloaded and installed the latest ELANTECH driver (v13.6.21.1) from Acer’s support page.
  • I also disabled the “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” option under Power Management.
  • Rebooted the system — the driver is installed fine, but the lag still returns randomly.
Is this something a BIOS update might fix? Or should I try changing the touchpad mode (I2C to PS/2) in BIOS if available? Any suggestions or working solutions would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

I'd first see if your laptop has any BIOS updates pending. Second, what OS are you working with? If it's Windows 10 or 11, what version(not edition) are you on? Do you see the same issue when using an USB driven mouse on your laptop?

I have an Acer Aspire 7 (A715-51G-74CX)
I looked up your laptop;

What OS did the laptop come bundled with? If it didn't come with Windows OS installed from Acer, where did you source the installer for the OS?

Thanks for the welcome — appreciate it!
I’m currently running Windows 11, version 23H2, fully up to date. The laptop came pre-installed with Windows 11 Home directly from Acer, so I didn’t install the OS myself or change anything major on that front.

I haven’t used a USB mouse much, but from the short time I did, I didn’t notice any lag — so it seems like the issue is only with the built-in ELAN touchpad.

I haven’t updated the BIOS yet, but I’ll check Acer’s support page for any available updates. Do you think it's worth updating even if the changelog doesn’t mention anything about touchpad or input fixes?

24H2 is the latest version.

Thanks again for the helpful replies so far — I really appreciate it.
Just to follow up: my BIOS is already fully up to date (V1.55), and I’ve also updated Windows to version 24H2, but the touchpad issue still came back shortly after boot. I’ve tried the latest ELAN driver and disabled the power-saving option for the device, but unfortunately, nothing has worked so far. Still hoping to find a solid fix — any other suggestions would be great!
