I've been setting up my new rig. I'm a software engineer by trade and will use the machine for that as well as a gamer.

I've (nearly) finished my build and am planning on picking up either a 690 or 680sli. Now I need some monitors. Ideally I'd like to spend less than $1000 for 3 monitors. I'm hoping people have some suggestions. That budget can move a little if necessary, but I'd need a good reason.

Am I being daft, trying to spend 1k on a graphics card, and only 1k on monitors?

Isn't the 8ms response time a bit slow for gaming on?

Depends on what you want, for color quality, IPS monitors are definitely better... but if you really need that 2ms response, you'd have to get a TN monitor to stay with-in your budget... also, I assume you're getting 3x 1080p monitors?

I'd love to go higher, but I've not found a way to do that and stay inside my budget. Not being a graphic designer I've not fretted too much about true color reproduction, should that make a discernable difference gaming?

Only get monitors with Displayport though, it will save you much headache when it comes to dealing with Eyefinity.

He isn't going eyefinity, so there's no reason to get display port monitor. nVidia (unlike AMD!) supports any digital connections for Surround, not just display port. The most popular one is DVI - not only GTX 680/690 has multiple ports of it, so it eliminates need of adapters, but also monitors that have it as a main connector, are generally cheaper. Win-Win situation IMO!

Which is rather nice really. Still good to future proof a bit though.
