My Windows task bar had disappeared for some reason and after trying several
recommended solutions – create new user, restore to prior check point, . I
needed to reinstall Windows XP. I had been up to date running xp2, spybot,
adaware, and mcafee anitvirus, but that wasn’t enough. After reinstalling
windows xp from my disk (which was sp1), I also installed Microsoft
antispyware. I run antispyware on several other computers in my home. I
booted up my machine and everything was working fine. I got a pop up message
from MSFT antispyware regarding windows netbios messenger…
Windows NetBios - Messenger
Microsoft AntiSpyware has detected that the Windows NetBIOS Messenger
Service is currently running. (This service should not be confused with the
peer-to-peer Windows Messenger service, or MSN Messenger service, which are
used for Internet Chat).
Beginning with Windows XP Service Pack 2, the Windows NetBIOS Messenger
service is disabled by default. For most users, no functionality will
I clicked on the AntiSpyware button to go ahead and disable the Windows
NetBios Messenger. It then requested that I reboot. When I clicked ok to
reboot, : as i said, on the gateway startup screen, usually at the bottom you
see three messages hit tab to see messages, f1 to change system settings or
f12 to boot from the network. I only see the tab message now and the next
thing I see is invalid boot disk hit ctl alt del to reboot.
I tried fixing the hard drive with fixboot and fixmbr, reinstalling windows.
I even got the same message when I took a good hard drive from my other
computer and tried to boot off of it. It works fine in the other computer.
