Trouble Starting New Rig

Hi all, this is my first time building a computer im now completely lost as to what too do and what is going on. Last night i assembled it all using manuals and another fellow newbies help. Installed the cpu, cpu cooler, ram, one of my 7970's and the power supply. Trouble was it wouldnt boot, not a single fan would turn on not even the cpu cooler. The motherboard had its green light (Ive read that doesnt mean too much) and yet pushing the power button did nothing.

This morning i have pulled everything out of the motherboard minus the actual cpu. Put the stock cpu cooler on because i think that will do untill i start overclocking (if i get over this trauma) and put everything back in and rewired hoping it was just the powerbutton wired incorrectly due to lack of lighting. But i thought this time i would leave out the gpu and try to get a boot out of it, again nothing. Not even the cpu stock cooler would spin.

Not sure what i am doing wrong but im stressing that something is broken, i have tried to be gentle and not have and static problems and looked at a few different videos/threads and im just not making any progress.

Asus Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard
Intel i7 3770K
Corsair Vengeance ram 2x8GB ddr3
2x Gigabyte HD 7970's overclocked 3gb
Samsung 840 Pro Series 128gb SSD
Coolermaster Silent Pro Hybrid 850W Fully Modular PSU

If anyone has any guides or advice for a first time builder with little knowledge feel free to let me know. If getting someone else to build it for me was an option i would do so, i think this stressing has cut 10 years off my life.

Did you test bench the system before assembling it in the case?
Its where you assemble the rig outside of the case to test if the components work before you go to the effort of screwing it in. It also eliminates the possibility of the mobo shorting out to something and preventing POST (which seems to be the issue your facing).

Might seem obvious, but try reseating the power cables. My rig when I was transporting it somehow unplugged the 4pin CPU cable but it still looked like it was in. Spent about 2hrs fretting about how I would fix it when to me it seemed the mobo was outright dead. Unplugged the 4pin, plugged back in and POST was achieved.
Reason why I didn't instantly test bench the system was because it was quite effectively strapped in with water-cooling equipment. Good thing I found the problem before I went to the effort of pulling all that apart.

Thank you very much, i will have a look over these now. After making this topic i tested my psu and ram in my current pc and the computer ran fine so i will give this test benching a go. Im now thinking that alot of my troubles are due to not connecting the case wiring correctly to the motherboard. But thanks helps for the help and i will get back to you once im done =)

Ahh, if you want to check if its just the case switches wired up incorrectly. Just grab a screwdriver and use that to connect the two pins on the mobo for the front power button, that will make the connection and hopefully the rig will start.

I have just plugged in 1x gfx, cpu, cpu fan and 2 sticks of ram in the 2nd and 4th slot and ive touched the power button headers with no effect. I think the screwdriver ive used isnt coated in paint but not 100% sure, anything else that i could use?
If not what do you think the reasoning is? I currently have it sat on the mobo box so no metal is touching it

Anything that conducts electricity would work.
Strip the system down to just whats needed for POST.

Run through the steps in the guide I llinked too above. That will find most issues that could lead to it not POST'ing.
