Trouble with my hard disks after replacing the CPU

I previously has a Octek Rhino 12+ motherboard with the VIA VPX chipset with the Pentinum 233MMX. But after I replace the CPU with a K6-2 500 running at 450 and flash the BIOS to the newest version, my hard disks started to fail.
My 3gig primary slave hard disk's FAT and other system data was totally corrupted after I try to use it, scandisk try to fix it, but only make the matters worst. The hard disk ended up having a total data loss. So I formatted the hard disk and try to write stuff on it, the FAT still corrupted . However this only happens under my Win98 FE, when I format the hard disk under DOS and copy files under DOS, no error occur.
I wonder does the K6-2 have problems with Win98??? Do I need some kind of patch???
Also Win98 installed some very internal system drivers after I replaced the CPU and flash the BIOS, can that be the cause of the problem??? Should I format my primary master hard disk and reinstall Win98?
And my primary master hard disk always report the remaining hard disk space wrong after the CPU replacment and the BIOS update.
plz help!!!!

btw I scanned both of the hard disk under DOS and there's no bad sector or any kind of physical damage to any of them.
Edited by dennisz on 12/11/00 05:23 AM.

Sounds like you got yourself a bad hard drive. Time for a new one buddy. Sorry....

Are you running the right core voltage for that cpu? Also, what fsb speed are you running? I can't remember much about the vpx chipset, but I think it was a knock off of the intel vx chipset. If I am right, it will support a fsb speed of 66 or 75. I assume you are running 75x6 for 450. (2x multiplier trick) If so, I would check the core coltage again and also go down to 6x66 for 400. It's possible the board or one of your components won't stablize at a 75 fsb speed.

If that all fails, try reflashing to an earlier bios revision that will support a k6 processor.

Don't worry about the k62 patch for windows. Only windows 95 had a timing problem with that processor. It was corrected in windows 98.

Your hard disk is fine if scandisk under dos reports no errors. I would use a low level format utility to wipe it clean to eliminate the possibility of a virus.

In the end, the processor you have may be faulty. Find someone who will test it for you or have the shop you bought it from test it. Either that or go to a new socket 7 motherboard. You can probably find an old socket 7 for $20 or so. A new super 7 would even give you decent agp support!

Lotsa luck.

Try putting your original CPU back in for a while , this will help identify where the Problem is......

Before you do any of that, check the chipset on the motherboard. I've seen quite a few of the older AMD chipsets not have drivers native in windows. Second part of that is that when the wrong chipset drivers are in, windows will send all sorts of screwed up commands to the bios and can cause things that look like hard drive failure (because bios settings got screwed up). Intel had the problem with the old pentium boards when they first started with PIIX3 and windows 95a didn't have it installed default. Similar problems cropped up when switched over to PIIX4 with 95b. If you're not able to load windows at all, then only thing that would be relevant from what I just said, would be to clear the bios... not just restore defaults. Should have a clear NVRAM jumper or switch or a setting in bios. If you got up into windows (your old install) without correct drivers might've done what I was talking about and thrashed your bios settings. Last thing I would recommend would be checking out everything you can about the motherboard/chipset that you can find. Processor shouldn't be the issue nor hard drive if it was working prior to swapping out.

FUGGER is cool, he just waits for a post with someone with an AMD chip having any type of hardware/software problem then he just jumps in to dog AMD.

What version of Windows are you running? You mentioned Windows 98, but I was curious if this was an upgraded version or not. There is a patch availlable from AMD, and other places, for Windows 95 B

I have had this situation but it has been quite some time ago so I don't remember the details. I remember I had to underclock my K62-500 to 300MHz, load windows, apply the patch, then clock back up to 500MHz.
Since your slave drive data is trashed anyway, experiment with it being master, unhook other hard drives, and try to install windows to it, first clocked as your are now, and if that doesn't work, underclock to 300MHz. Make sure you delete your part and really start fresh.

Just a thought or two on a late night.

I am sorry your completly right why don't you go and sell your house so you can buy an Intel chip that might be fast by the end of next year...... Get A grip...

ok I am using a non-upgrade version of Win98 FE, I did a complete format and reinstall a little while ago.
I wonder will a 75mhz FSB cause any problems to the hard disk??? btw the max speed my motherboard can offically support is an AMD K6 300mhz.

I'll try to put the FSB back to 66 and see what will happen and/or I'll format the master hdd and reinstall Windows

Try putting the FSB back cos you will have overclocked your PCI Bus (one of which controls your ide Devices) and this can cause major Problems.....

yea thx the hdd works fine after putting the FSB back to 66mhz

a lesson learned painfully

Move your Core voltage a little bit down becuase you have undeclocked your CPU . it needs less power otherwise you might burn it a little.... I got the Tx97-xe board from asus
running at 75 FSB! runs cool.... Maybe you had a Memory problem ? overclocked the memory ?
