I have been having some issues with my computer lately, I built it myself this past December. It has run great until now, where it has been randomly locking up, where i would have to manually shut it off. It would lock up displaying whatever was on the screen. I have reformatted, updated all my drivers, cleared my cmos, flashed my bios, tested my ram, and soundcard. Im running out of ideas. Currently i have a AMD 3500+ 939, MSI Neo2 platinum mobo with the nForce 3 chipset, 1gig of 3200 corsair, 480 Watt Antec PSU, eVGA 6800 GT, AUdigy 2 ZS soundcard. I have also tested for overheating, and this is not the issue. ANy advice would be appreatiated

MSI.. say it all..

In my experience, MSI motherboard doesnt ;ast very long. Yours, being 7 months old is probably failing.

I would try to bump the vpltage for the memory and CPU in case of regulators failing to deliver proper voltage.

Hope you have a spare setup. I sent back so many bad rma boards that msi got tired of hearing from me, and sent me a brand new board with a newer chipset. It's been almost a year, and the board runs pretty good, but acts up once in a while. I like msi cause of the endless bios adjustments. But those vast number of adjustments make tracking a problem more difficult. I spent almost 2 months sending back 4 rma's before I received a brand new board. Was it worth it? That's for you to decide. It costs about $5 to fedex a board by ground, and they might send you a board with a different problem from yours. But I would try it anyway if you're out of options and have a spare system.

Im running an msi via kt266 board from 5 years ago and not one single problem - no bios updates ever done. Also have two other msi boards in computers for friends with no problems for over a year.

You're a lucky man, Sturm!

While I agree with what's been said about MSI being a crap shoot of questionable quality, I have to wonder if you've also tried:

1) Getting a can of compressed dry air and blowing every last bit of dust out of your system.

2) Removing and reinserting all of your cables and cards to make sure that none have a loose connection.

I had a socket A MSI board and it worked while I had it but it was very unstable and crashed a lot. This was in my cheap bastard days and I had a PC Chips mobo with onboard graphics after the MSI and the MSI made the PC Chips mobo look like high quality stuff.

I have owned a few MSI boards without ever a problem, I actually have a rig right now that is running this very Neo2 Plat that he MIGHT be having trouble with, but I think it is far too early to blame the mobo.

agreed,

i would check to see if you have an excessive amount of dust in your cpu hs/f.

Some people do get lucky. That's the way that it usually goes with MSI. It's a crap shoot. Will I have problems with this MSI product and have to RMA it? Will it behave enough to work with it? Will it be perfectly fine? How many times can I RMA it before it cost me more to take this chance than it did to go with a manufacturer that's more reputable?

So far, every MSI product that I've had (not just mobos) has had at least one minor problem. Not all result in death, but I've yet to have a single MSI product be completely flawless.

But then I research what the likely problems are with an MSI product are before I roll those dice and weigh if I can live with any of the problems and/or fix the product myself.

but I think it is far too early to blame the mobo
I agree. It is too early to blame it. However it's just the right time to suspect it.
